I said, “Because he’s very well-behaved, and only barks at idiots like you who try to harm the ship.”

Squirrels get red, too. John said, “I think we’d better leave him alone, before you give him a stroke, Bob”

I replied, “Fine with me. He’s not much of a conversationalist.”

We went in the other patient’s room. Lakki said, “Oh, this is disappointing. I already know all of his cuss words.”

I said, “Gee, I was hoping today would be more educational for you.”

The prisoner asked, “What are you babbling about, stupid monkey?”

I said, “You’re the prisoner, not me. How do you figure I’m the stupid one?”

He replied, “You go to so much trouble to save the life of a beast. You must be stupid.”

I said, “He’s a good and loyal friend. You’re mouthy scum. Seems to me I made the right choice.”

Since he was a prisoner, he was restrained. That kept him from doing much when Snitz jumped up in the bed, lifted his leg, and made his feelings known. Once Snitz jumped down, we turned and left. Lakki said, “Nope. Didn’t help. Same old boring stuff, just louder.”

John said, “Well, you’ve upset all the patients I have. I guess your work here is done, Bob.”

I asked, “So, they’ll both heal okay without an autodoc?”

John replied, “Sure. I didn’t even give in to the temptation to give them interesting scars.”

I said, “Jane must be a good influence on you.”

John said, “Actually, she was the one who suggested it. I thought it might be bad for inter-species relations.”

Nikki said, “Reverse psychology. I’ve got to remember to try that on Bob.”

John said, “Bob is too hardheaded for that to work. He’ll figure out what you’re up to, and do it just to spite you.”

Nikki replied, “You’re probably right. Good old, straightforward Bob. You can get him to do most anything, if you just ask, but try and con him, and he’s a brick wall.”

Taz said, “You organics really haven’t figured out how to deal with the Boss, yet? Just figure out what he’s going to want, and get it done before he has a chance to ask for it. Do that a few times, and he’ll cut you slack to do whatever you need to.”

Nikki said, “That’s easy, when you have enough processor power to game out all the possibilities. Us organics have a little more trouble figuring things out.”

Taz replied, “That must be annoying.”

Lakki said, “Not really. The uncertainty makes life more interesting. If we knew how things were going to come out, before we did them, there wouldn’t be any thrill to finding out.”

John said, “Well put, Lakki.”

I said, “We’ll get on out of your way, John.”

He replied, “See you around.”

We took off, and I said, “Let’s go see how Jane is doing.”

Nikki asked, “What’s she up to?”

I replied, “Interviewing one of the prisoners who was being mouthy and annoying last night.”

Lakki asked, “Why didn’t she get interviewed last night?”

I replied, “Jane was tired, and it didn’t seem to be urgent. Besides, this way the prisoner got to sit in interrogation and wait all night.
