Chapter 13

It didn’t make sense to Shar why she’d frozen up like that. As she quickly walked out of the restaurant, down the stairs, and through the main part of the resort, her mind whirled with thoughts of what Daniel had told her. She still wasn’t sure who exactly this guy was and why he was staying on his brother’s couch and bartending.

The only thing that made sense was that he was grieving his father’s death. She could understand that.

After all, hadn't she just lost her fiancé. The past month had been horrible, and when she wasn’t crying and lamenting the loss of a life she wanted so badly, she would find herself in la-la land, thinking of how different her life could have been if her parents had lived.

Maybe her mother would have seen what a jerk Tom was. Maybe her father would have insisted she go to art school in Paris and she never would have met Tom.

Shar sang to herself. “Betcha he reads, betcha she sews, maybe they … don’t really care, as long as they’re mine …” It was an Annie song. Shar liked the original Annie, especially the scene when Annie sings about what kind of parents she would have had if they’d kept her. Maybe it didn’t really reflect Shar’s situation, because she’d actually had amazing parents and they hadn’t left her at an orphanage, but they had left her.

Pain assaulted the center of her chest. She put her hand over her heart and could barely breathe. No. She didn’t want to think about losing her parents. It’d been a long time since she’d really had a pity party over it, but it was still hard.

She didn’t want to just go in her room and be alone. She was in Jamaica. Part of her wished she had stayed with Daniel, but his words had hit too close to home. The thing he’d said about wanting kids had been a hot topic for her and Tom; he’d considered maybe having one, while she wanted as many as she could have.

On impulse, she followed the side path around her building that dropped her off next to a different tiki bar, right next to a path by the ocean. She brightened a little when she spotted the piña colada machine. The machine always had virgin piña coladas—one of the perks of an all-inclusive that had led her to Hope Haven Grand Resort. She asked the bartender for one.

The bartender paused. “You’re the lady that Daniel went zip-lining with today, right?” His brown face lit up with a huge grin.

She felt caught, but not in a bad way. “Yes.”

The guy got her a piña colada and asked if she wanted him to add rum. She shook her head and accepted her drink.

The guy nodded. “I am Taj.”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Shar.”

He grinned at her. “Nice to meet you, Shar.”

She turned away from the bar and moved down the path to the ocean, drink in hand. There was
