Chapter 13

***Hensley***

It was really nice to see my mom for a little while. It was also really nice to spend the afternoon outside at the farmer’s market. I didn’t spend very much time outside in Manhattan, aside from my daily commute, but I wasn’t sure how much that really counted, considering I was always rushing through the city streets to catch the next subway. There were some wonderful public markets in the city, but there was an entirely different feel about these markets. Maybe it was knowing that the things on the farm stand were grown fresh right here. Penfield was a suburban neighborhood, but it was surrounded by orchards and farmlands.

The public market was downtown, and so I met my mother there with Cody. I had told her about the baby, but she hadn’t yet met her grandson, and I was preparing for her to both be shocked and to gush all over him. I drew the line at pinching his chubby cheeks, though.

“Oh…my…God…” my mother said with a theatrical level of excitement. “Is this him? Of course, it’s him. Oh my God, Hensley, he’s beautiful.”

“Thanks, Mom,” I smiled. “I tend to think so too.”

“He has your eyes, your big, brown eyes. Did his father have those eyes, too, or is that all from you?”

“Let’s grab a coffee first,” I said, trying to stall the conversation I knew we were going to get into.

I wanted to talk to my mom, and I wanted to tell her everything. I needed to be able to vent. I just needed some coffee and me first. Normally I vented to Monica, and I knew that I still could talk to her about everything over the phone. But it just wasn’t the same as talking in person. Plus, I just really felt like I needed my mom right now.

She carried him through the market while we found my favorite coffee stand. She fawned all over my son, and Cody ate it up with coos and giggles. They say that babies have a sense about them that can tell a person’s character right off the bat. I think that’s true. And I could already see how much Cody loved my mom.

“I can’t believe this little coffee truck is still here,” I said to my mom as we waited for our lattes.

“Almost everything you loved as a child is still here,” she said.

“I wasn’t exactly a child when I was going to the coffee truck at the market. I was more like a teenager and driving myself,” I reminded her.

“It doesn’t matter how old you get to me. You’ll always be my child.”

And that’s when I started to tear up.

“Awe, Hensley, what is it? she asked.

“Mom, I really need to talk to you about what’s going on.”

We sat down at one of the little tables, and my mom kept Cody on her lap. She brought a whole purse full of baby toys and goodies to entertain him and dig around in while we talked.

I told my mom everything.
