My alarm goes off with a shrill sound and I feel as though I just went to sleep. I tossed and turned all night and I am not ready to face another day at work. Following my routine, the first thing I do after getting out of bed is check on Sienna. She should still be asleep since she woke up in the middle of the night from a nightmare. The sight in front of me causes me to stop in my tracks. Gabriel is laying in Sienna’s twin size bed with Sienna asleep on his chest and her head in the crook of his neck. His feet are dangling off the end of the bed but he looks content.

I don’t want to ruin their moment so I exit the room to start the coffee machine and take a shower. After my shower, they are still sleeping so I snap a quick picture of the two of them before I have to wake them up. Sienna is not going to daycare today but Victoria will be over shortly to watch her. I give them both a little shake and they stretch identically with one hand raised and look at me through half- lidded eyes.

“It is time to get up, Sienna. Mommy has to go to work and your dad has to go home for a little while.”

When I mention Gabriel, I see her instinctively hold on to him a little tighter. It is cute but she has to learn he has his own life as well.

“Mrs. Victoria is coming to watch you today and maybe even take you to the park. You can see your daddy again after I get off work, princess. You are going to be a big girl for mommy and daddy and miss us while we are gone, right? Then when we come back you can tell us all about your day.”

I know mentioning being a big girl will help her let go because she is always wanting to be a big girl. She looks at me for a minute before turning to Gabriel. He nods at her and she releases him.

“You are coming back tonight right, daddy?”

“I will see you tonight. Maybe you and your mom can come over to my house tonight so daddy won’t have to sleep in such a small bed again.”

He tickles her a little and she giggles. I hate that he mentions going over his house without first talking to me. We agreed to co-parent not make decisions and deal with the consequences.

“Can we go over daddy’s house tonight, mommy?”

“Mommy and daddy will talk about that, and we will see. Daddy could stay at his house tonight and if you are a big girl tonight he can pick you up from daycare tomorrow.”

Sienna doesn’t look too happy at this prospect, but luckily Victoria is at the door.

“Alright Sienna, we have to go now. Mrs. Victoria is here. Be good.”
