CHAPTER 14
Lacey found exactly what sheâd been looking for at the giant sporting goods store near the mall. A size-seven reel, on holiday sale and stacked with a coupon sheâd found online, kept her under budget enough that she could afford a set of intricate fly fishing lures.
The salesman said heâd fished on the San Juan River and the reel would not only be the most versatile, but the tiny, feathered lures would be perfect for the fish in the particular river. Faux insect eggs, larvae, and small flies with the most minuscule hooks dotted the sheepâs wool in the box. She hadnât stopped to consider fish would want insects available to them at a particular time of year. To her, fishing meant worms, and a worm was a worm was a worm. Learn something new every day.
Janelle also scored at the same store. A drone for Scott. Heâd been certified to use one at the police department, but could only fly the miniature âcopter for official business only, and even then, not often. Janelle managed to get one of the four-propeller machines on sale and with a coupon too.
Best shopping day ever, despite the frantic holiday crowds. The trek across the giant parking lot back to her truck burned off some of yesterdayâs gingerbread pancake calories.
She climbed into the driverâs seat, and Janelle slid into the passenger side.
While she buckled her seatbelt, her friend said in a tone of mock wonder, âI almost didnât recognize Olâ Blue without the Whataburger bags, Dr. Pepper cans, and peanut butter cracker wrappers.â
The poor truck had been a hot mess for years. Lacey hadnât given her friend a ride in several weeks. Since she moved on from the hectic schedule of working at the veterinary clinic, volunteering at the animal shelter, and going to college, she managed to keep the old girl much cleaner.
âThanks?â she said dryly. âYouâve seen my truck since we started at Tech. You know I may not have kept the inside super tidy, but I always keep up with my maintenance. She may be twelve years old and have almost two hundred thousand on her, but this diesel is still getting broken in. Olâ Blueâs got many more miles on her.â Lacey patted the dashboard with affection.
âYou realize the truck canât understand you?â Janelle asked with raised brows and an arid tone.
Lacey shrugged. âI get clairvoyant visions. Machines understanding me isnât outside my realm of possibility.â
âWell, when you put it that wayâ¦â her friend said with a laugh and a rueful head shake.
âAny more stops before we get on the road?â Lacey turned the key and waited for the light to say the dieselâs special starter had warmed up enough to start the engine. After yesterdayâs tail-beating with Detective Mullins, Lacey had been determined to enjoy today with her friend. She and Janelle spent the morning lazing around with Walker before his shift, then headed to lunch and the shops, where theyâd been lucky to find some good Christmas sales to finish up their holiday present needs.
