MORNING SUNSHINE

Hesta woke up with a blazing headache. Evie slept against her side, her head against Hesta’s shoulder and her arm stretched across her middle. With every breath Evie took, warm air brushed against the side of her neck. Evie wasn’t the reason she had a headache, though. Staying up nearly all night to read Ezmie Raddich’s journal had done that. She lifted Evie’s arm from over her body and tried to slip out from underneath.

Evie opened her eyes. “You could just ask.” She smiled. “You were up very late. Did you get any sleep at all?”

“Not much,” Hesta admitted.

“The journal?”

“Yes. And now I shall pay for staying up all night. My eyes are sore, and I have a blazing headache.”

“Then maybe you should rest all day, stay here in bed.”

“With you?”

“Of course. I must make sure you’re kept safe and warm,” Evie said with a huge grin.

“I must admit, the thought of time alone is welcome.” She linked her fingers with Evie’s. “We could go out for the day, somewhere nice, and forget about all the troubles here. We could take Remzi and Florie with us. Maybe a picnic by Castle Hill Lake, or something like that.”

Evie snuggled against her side. “All of that sounds lovely. Really lovely.”

“Yes, but right now I need a visit to the necessary.”

Evie yawned. “Me, too. You go first. I’ll just stay here. In the warm.”

“Or you could race down to the kitchen, where it will be warm from the oven, and get me something to drink.”

Evie pouted. “And what will I get for dashing about in the cold?”

“I’ll think of something.” Hesta kissed Evie quickly and chastely and slipped out of bed.

It was chilly outside the thick warmth of the blankets and without Evie’s body heat next to her. “Cold,” she said, and wrapped a dressing gown around her shoulders. Godwyn, who liked all the finest things, had installed a fully flushable water closet in what had been a tiny six-foot-square storage room at the end of the landing. Better that than a potty at the foot of the bed.

As soon as she returned, Evie was already back in bed. She pointed at the bedside table. “I got tea for you. Do I get my reward now?”

Hesta laughed. She draped her dressing gown at the foot of the bed and got back under the covers.

“And?” Evie prompted. She opened her arms and the blanket fell away. She didn’t have a stitch on. “I’m cold. You should warm me up.”

Hesta crawled closer, and Evie helped her remove her nightdress. Then she rolled Evie onto her back so they could lie with nothing between them. She stared into Evie’s eyes for a long moment and lowered her head for a kiss. Sweet at first, but it soon became something far more heated. Evie’s hands ran over her back and pulled her closer.

The door to the bedroom whooshed open and thudded against the wall. “Evie! Hesta!” Remzi yelled as she raced across the room and jumped on the bed.
