Sandy Point State Park is visible from the westbound lane, its shores populated in-season with surfers, swimmers, and sun-worshippers. During the winter holiday season, the park sparkles with the elaborate display called “Lights on the Bay” sponsored by Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Eastbound, the bridge overlooks a shoreline edged with elaborate waterfront homes and simple cottages as well as a small airport and busy marina accessed via the first exit after crossing the bridge. Every June, hundreds gather on this shore to welcome the brave souls who have swum more than 4 miles from Sandy Point State Park as participants in the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim.
Brian J. Earley is credited as the inspiration for the event when he swam the bay in 1982 in memory of his dad, who had recently died of diabetes complications. Since then, more than 3,000 swimmers have completed the course, which raises funds for the Maryland Chapter of the March of Dimes.
