‘Beef kid’ is a small wooden tub in which salt beef was served; ‘scouse’ a Liverpudlian traditional meat stew with potatoes and onions; the ‘fore peak’ is the interior part of the ship that is furthest forward in the angle of the bow; ‘main’ is another name for ocean; a ‘gig’ is a light rowing or sail boat, kept for speed rather than work, and often used as a fast launch for the captain; the ‘galley’ is the kitchen or food preparation area; ‘orlop’ is the name of the lowest deck on a wooden sailing ship with three or more decks.
