Chapter 20

Viv was having a very productive day. She’d had a telephone catch-up with her therapist and she was feeling great. The meds were working, and she was feeling more and more like her old self. She had spent a little time in the loft going through the box from the nursery. She’d forced herself to do it, but she recognised that she had to move on and remember, but to try and do it in a healthy way for herself. Afterwards, she emailed her therapist her thoughts and he had been incredibly supportive and encouraging about her progress.

She had spoken to her boss to arrange a phased return to work, and he had given her a small project to break her in gently. She had then spent the rest of the morning with Jenny, approving her choices for her themed hotel rooms and making further suggestions that Jenny had embraced fully.

Viv was looking forward to the evening at Maggie’s but in equal part was nervous about it. She realised she should take something as a thank you for her, so she threw on her coat and grabbed her handbag, with a view to going to the florist to buy some flowers. As she pulled the front door closed and double locked it, she heard a crying baby. She stood completely still for a moment, the key poised in the air, feeling a faint panic washing over her. She was afraid to look around, terrified that the sound was being created in her own mind. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply and still she heard the noise. She mentally checked in on herself and used some of the exercises she had been taught.

Breathe deeply. What day is it? What time is it? How do I feel? Where am I going? What do I see?

She opened her eyes, turned around and sagged with relief against the front door. A woman walked past her with a crying baby strapped to her front, desperately trying to comfort it. Viv blew out a breath and stood for a moment leaning weakly against the door. She was overcome with relief that it was a real baby, having a real cry. She wasn’t hearing things. She took a deep breath and steeled herself. Glancing at her watch, she realised she needed to get a move on and hurried off up the high street to the florist before it closed.

Hannah sat in the nurse’s office and watched the last of the episodes of the soaps she had missed during the week on her small iPad. She turned off the screen and walked through the quiet ward checking on her sleeping patients. Her phone pinged. It was a message from Anne saying that she wouldn’t be able to get away. Hannah replied with a sad face emoji and wandered through the sleeping ward again. She returned to the office, activated an app on her phone and dialled home. She cooed, gently, when the camera showed them all sat waiting patiently for her.
