Chapter Twenty-Two

Puzzling dreams and unsettling periods between sleep and being awake filled the night. I couldn’t put my finger on anything specific, but it was far from normal. My guess was the uneasiness was caused by the pending meeting with Mike Stone. But why? The Stone family was pleasant. Desmond was strange but from my brief encounters with him I couldn’t tell if he was simply being a rebellious teen or something more sinister. Today at two, I agreed to enter the lair of the witch, correction four witches, and, oh yeah, a dog bigger than a Fiat. Aren’t witches supposed to have cats, cats that can’t put your whole head in their mouth? Enough! If I keep on this path, I’ll cancel the meeting. I’m being ridiculous.

Heading to Bert’s for coffee and human interaction will force me back to reality.

As soon as I entered the store, I was greeted with, “Morning, Chris.”

“Roger.”

He looked out the door then at me. “I’m standing here waiting for the storm.”

I didn’t remember asking him what he was doing. “Storm?”

“Chris, head to the Pier and look at those storm clouds rolling in.” Roger nodded towards the door.

“Sounds like a plan, but first, coffee.”

I drew a cup then walked toward the Pier. Off in the distance, I saw what Roger was talking about. Thick black clouds filled the space the early morning sun normally occupied. Instead of venturing on the Pier, I leaned against the railing overlooking the massive structure. Three fishermen headed my way, probably with little to show for their efforts. The wind had kicked up and the distant skies were so dark it made me think of Halloween. I stood watching the thunderheads rolling my way and was mesmerized by the life the clouds took on. When lightning appeared closer than I was comfortable with, I headed home.

By the time I reached my cottage, the rain arrived, deafening thunder vibrated in my ears. It was fortunate I hadn’t walked to the far end of the Pier. October had finally shown its natural colors with a vengeance. I couldn’t have picked a better setting to meet a witch than a stormy afternoon in late October.

My lack of sleep must’ve caught up with me since the next thing I remembered was waking up in my chair in the living room with ten minutes to get to Mike’s house. I headed to the car and was surprised the rain had stopped; however, thunder was still protesting and the petrichor of rain still filled the air. Roger should get a second job as a meteorologist since he predicted the storm when today’s weather gurus had called for partly cloudy with a zero percent chance of precipitation.

On the short drive, I continued wondering what Mike wanted to share. Surely, he wasn’t going to breach attorney client privilege and tell me about his conversations with Todd Lee. Or was he?

I pulled in the Stone’s drive and parked behind Banshee. I sat in my car a minute admiring Mike’s classic ride, then realized I couldn’t stall any longer.
