The A+ Skill of Appreciation

Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.

—ATTRIBUTED TO CICERO*

Jesse waits with a bunch of rowdy third graders in the lunch line. The cafeteria worker puts milk, chicken nuggets, apple slices, and a cookie on his tray. He takes his tray and walks toward a long table, without a word of thanks or even making eye contact with the lady.

It’s Christmas Day and Sarah can’t wait to open her gift. She tears the paper off the small box. “We hope you like it,” Sarah’s mom says with a big smile. The box opens to reveal a shiny white phone. “Oh no,” Sarah sighs with disappointment. “I wanted the latest one!”

We live in an age of entitlement where the simple words “thank you” are rare. Author Kristen Welch writes in her book, Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World: “Entitlement winds its course through my home, and the more I’ve become aware of its subtle infiltration, the more I see and hear it blatantly. This is all I get? There’s nothing else? From ice cream serving sizes to allowances, the opportunity to demand more is present. Is that all? I believe these three little words sum up the tone for those of us in most Western cultures.”1

Being raised on technology has made things worse. There are thousands of video options to stream on demand. Your child doesn’t have to wait one week to watch another episode of her favorite program. She can watch four episodes in a row. When bored with a video game, there’s always a new one to play. If you order something on Amazon, it could be on your doorstep tomorrow. In this world of instant everything, children can grow accustomed to being served exactly what they want, on demand, with no waiting. Alexa, play this song. Alexa, open Netflix. Alexa, turn lights off. Do you think any child ever says, Alexa, thank you?
