Skeeter dialed Jeff as he was running back to the house, "Got some info and a broken phone." Heâd only been gone twenty minutes, so Jeff was unprepared to be getting a call this soon. Jeff yelled for everyone to gather, and they all met Skeeter at the front door. Heâd run the five blocks like he was in a marathon race. He tossed the phone to Jeff while quickly telling them about his conversation with old man Charlie and Danny over at the market.
Angie leaned over and looked at the phone closely, "That looks like Veldaâs phone, or one just like hers," Sam nodded his head in agreement.
"Yea, she had a dark-blue blue LG. May I?" Doctor Winston asked, taking the phone and turning it over in his hand, "She had her initials carved in the left back corner, right about here," He pointed to what looked like tiny initials of VS. He handed the phone to Sam shaking his head, "What the hell is going on here? Can anybody make any sense out of this?"
Lillie was quiet throughout the conversation, "Ok gang, letâs brainstorm. This young man, Danny, says he saw Velda across the street walking toward the store, right?"
Skeeter nodded and interjected, "The next thing he sees is her talking to a man in an old blue SUV. At least, the decided he thought it must be an SUV."
"Skeeter?" Sam asked, "What was that you said about the car pointing in the wrong direction?"
"Yea, he said like if a car pulled over to the curb, so the driver could be close to the sidewalk. So, he didnât get a look at the guy. Says he was busy unloading the truck. He said the next trip back out front, the car was gone, and he didnât see Velda come into the store. He just thought maybe she left without stopping in."
"When did he find the phone?" Sam asked.
"He says an hour later when a truck was backing out. Says the driver yelled down to him that there was a phone lying by the sidewalk curb all smashed up. Danny grabbed it and stuck it in his pocket. The kidâs not real smart," Skeeter said, "He had no reason to tie it together. He just thought heâd found him a phone to play with."
There was complete silence as the entire team stood around the kitchen table looking at each other mulling over the details.
"Well," Lillie clarified, "we know for sure that Velda didnât make it into the store. That she may have left in that SUV, Truck or car with a man. We have no idea if she knew him or not."
"She never went out after we moved here to California," Angie spoke up.
"I agree with Angie," Sam stated, "And this looks like it is her phone, all busted up."
"Wait, what are we saying here?" Dr. Winston demanded, "My God, do you think she could have been kidnapped or something?"
Lillie stated what they were all hesitant to say out loud, "I think we have to treat this as a kidnapping.
