In our situation, as a writer working on a scrappy rough draft of a book, sometimes a gentle adjustment to the second question can be more powerful since in our situation we might actually be able to answer, “Yes, it is absolutely true that I am a slow writer,” and that wouldn’t help quiet the unhelpful inner critic.

In those situations we can change the second question to,

Will this always be true?

Odds are that you will be able to imagine a future when you can write more quickly or change whatever situation your critic is warning you about. If you can answer, “No” to “will this always be true?” then you have an argument that you can frame as a “yes…but…”

Here are several nasty whispers I collected from the inner critics of our Creative Academy members. I’ve asked the questions, “Is it true?” and “Can you absolutely know that it’s true” or “Will this always be true?” and categorized each one as either a possible truth or a lie.

You have no right to write about things you have not experienced yourself. (lie)

Your story is trivial. (possible truth)

Writing is too hard. (lie)

Why bother? It’ll never be finished. (lie)

What if my story is terrible and never gets published? (possible truth)

What if my story gets published and everyone hates it? (lie)

You're not creative enough. (lie)

Everything you've written is cliche. (lie)

You can't write this scene until you figure out something else. (possible truth)

My words don't matter. (lie)

You know nothing, Jon Snow. (hilarious)

I'm not good enough. (possible truth)

I'm a shitty writer. (possible truth)

I'm bored. I should watch TV instead. (possible truth)

I don't have anything to say. (possible truth)

I have nothing to say. (lie)

I don't have any more good stories left. I had a good run but now I am done. (lie)

Even if your book is any good, there are so many books out there already, nobody will ever find it and buy it. (lie)

This book will never sell. (lie)

This book will be a failure. (lie)

My prose could be stronger. (possible truth)

My vocabulary should be richer. (possible truth)

My flow of sentences is not good enough. (possible truth)
