Vibrations of Violence

Caroline saw a flash of light reflecting off a serrated blade. It reminded her of the faceted reflections of a crystal chandelier. Caroline lunged at the knife, and a face with a blunt jaw hovered over her.

That face is familiar, she thought.

The knife pressed in at her, and her fingers burned at the effort at rallying against the thick wrist. Someone screamed her name, and it was followed by a loud noise.

“No, wait!” an eerily familiar voice screamed.

The scream was subsumed by an aborted gurgle. Something warm and wet sprayed across her face. It tasted like a one-cent piece against her lips. Oddly, her overloaded ears heard the infinitesimal sound of something tearing. Another scream followed.

Her back grew damp, hot, and sticky. A film of something stuck to her back and soaked through her blouse. She tried to move, kicking her legs in vain. She felt someone else next to her bucking, arm, and legs flailing and colliding with hers, as the surface she lay on bounced and moved.

“She’s waking up,” a gravelly voice declared.

“Shit, really?” another voice replied before sighing heavily. “This just isn’t my day, huh?”

Silver glinted in the low light just in her periphery. She tried to turn her head to track the silver phantom, but when her neck finally met her demands, she choked on a thick, metallic taste that congealed in her mouth and collected on her clothes. A face blocked what little light there was, and a hand was locked on her jaw. She felt as if she were drowning. She desperately needed oxygen. Everything was distorted as a rain of vermilion splashed on her face and corrupted her sight. A hand of steel flashed, then dropped out of sight. Again it happened, and strange sounds accompanied it. She didn’t want to acknowledge what her brain told her what that action meant.

Caroline thrust an open palm out to disrupt her attacker, but a meaty fist caught it and bent it to her chest. She swung with her free hand, but it was easily intercepted and pinned next to the other. She struggled against her captor, the dampness of her environment soaking her to her bones. The terror of what was happening froze her to the core.

“Don’t do this!” a shrill voice screamed. “There’s a lot of money, let’s make a deal!”

A body straddled her legs, pressing her into the dampness. The heat from within and without subsumed to frigidity.

Where the hell is it?

She thrashed, and a fist grabbed her by the hair.

“Hold her down, God damn it!”

Fingers grabbed at her blouse, buttons heading for cover.

“Get her mouth open!”

Hands slammed into her shoulders, pinning her down, trapping her. More fingers wrapped around her neck, choking her as they squeezed. She shouted futilely in a silent scream, hungry for precious oxygen. She heard a shrill voice next to her scream an unnatural octave, and then it abruptly stopped. The cessation of notes filled her with dread.

A low rumble sounded in her ear, but? the vibrations of violence couldn’t rip her attention from the hands that threatened to end her life.
