Mary swirled her fingers near her ear and tiny wisps of luminous green smoke appeared. She waved her hand towards her now visible shop door. The smoke travelled out and down the cobblestone street bouncing up and over bricks as though it were water rippling over rocks in a stream.

Chloe presumed it was to let other members of the coven know it was time to get the Spree Mirror ready for their unscheduled departure. The witches had been feverishly communicating back and forth that way since learning of their plan to take Bram to the Horsemen realm.

“Bottoms up.” Mary prompted, looking at the vial in Chloe’s hand.

Chloe popped the cork off the thick black goo. She could have sworn she saw it moving. It reminded her of a primordial ooze of bubbling soup.

“Best to hold your breath, too.”

Remembering her earlier instructions from when Mary first gave her the strange concoction, Chloe chugged if fast. It crept and crawled down her throat like a slug out for a stroll in the morning dew. “Ugh, that’s disgusting.” She immediately regretted speaking because then the taste and smell hit her. The combination of orange juice, toothpaste, and black licorice assaulted her tongue. It was the most awful thing she could possibly imagine until the smell came back up. The foul odor of rotting meat and wet steaming manure surrounded her.

Mary just smiled. “You’ll thank me later.”

“Blech! Yuk.” Chloe scrunched her face and shook her head in vain trying to get rid of the taste. “No way.”

Mary had to laugh. “Here take this.” She handed Chloe a syringe full of white fluid that had swirls of bioluminescent purple gel moving inside of it. The thick gauged needle at the end of it looked strong enough to pierce through an alligator’s hide. “Like human epinephrine.” She answered the questioning look Chloe was giving her. “Think of it like a shot of adrenaline, but on steroids, for something the size of a bus.”

Chloe gave her a horrified look. “I am not stabbing him in the heart with this!”

“Well, I’m sure as hell not going to do it.” Mary’s eyes narrowed into slits. “He likes you. He won’t kill you when he comes to. And, we need him conscious once he’s over there. So, we’re still doing this, yes?”

Taking a deep breath, Chloe nodded in compliance. “Yes.”

“Tenebris, come down here. It’s time.” The Spree witch grabbed the old leather case that once housed Bram’s sword and placed it on the counter near his body.

The raven flew down and almost appeared to curtsy to Chloe out of respect.

“That can’t go with us.” Mary eyed the bladeless sword strapped to Chloe’s thigh. “He’ll keep it safe. He always has.”

Unstrapping the holster, Chloe put it and the sword into the awaiting case. Closing the case, she placed her hands on it hoping she wasn’t making a huge mistake trusting the Spree witches. Slowly and reluctantly, she backed away.

The massive raven’s talons stretched out, grabbing the case mid-flight as he returned to the rafters high above the Spree shop.
