ESSENTIALISM, FOR ALL its trouble, allows us to map different physical states to the same organism across development: from calf to cow, piglet to pig, gosling to goose. We can even map vastly different physical states to the same organism: from caterpillar to pupa to butterfly, egg to tadpole to frog, seed to sapling to tree. We recognize not only that an organism retains its species identity as it grows but also how its identity unfolds over time, affecting its appearance and behavior.

Oddly, we have much less trouble tracking species identity over time, particularly our own identity. From a preschooler’s point of view, people never change—at least not that much. Some people appear to have been placed on the earth as children, and others as adults. The idea that children grow into adults is not as intuitive as it might seem. Take, for example, the following conversation between the psychologist Susan Carey and her daughter Eliza when Eliza was three and a half:
