What is the correct bend?
In the case of work on circles, many trainers experience great concern about the horse falling out through the outside shoulder, but greater concern that there is too much bend. As already shown in the work when at halt, you should not be afraid of too much bend. When working on the circle the horse can be bent to a great degree.
When working in-hand, it is rare for a horse to run out through his shoulder, since just by stopping, the trainer can prevent this at any time. The horse will quickly realise that his handler does not have to go with him when he tries to evade, since she is not seated in the saddle but rather can remain where she is on the circle. The rein can be used not only to restrict but also of course to stop the horse. As soon as the limit of the combined distance of the trainer’s arm and the outside rein is reached, the horse will learn to recognise and accept the limitation to his movement. Only in the case of very large or long horses is it necessary sometimes to ask for a greater degree of bend to exert added control of the shoulders. It is especially helpful to use the exercise on a circle whereby the circle is made smaller and then larger, ensuring that the flexion and bend is controlled throughout, and the reaction to the outside bend is also checked constantly.
If the horse does fall out with this quarters, you need only to move towards the forehand and increase the tempo – there is no supporting outside leg as there would be when riding. You enlarge the circle through the forehand and utilise the driving aid, otherwise the horse is likely to fall out further through the quarters.
