Chapter 12
âProtect your prince!â one of the guards cried out before he raised a long sword up into the air. âAnd for Godâs sake, someone needs to summon the priests!â
While one soldier turned to sprint out the door, the other men pulled out their weapons and narrowed their eyes in our direction. I could smell the fear on them like a wolf catching the scent of fresh blood in the forest, and I knew they were on the verge of pissing themselves. As we aimed our wands in their direction, a group of them clumsily dashed toward us, and we didnât waste a moment.
âPraeteritum!â Vanessa and I shouted at the same time.
Spurts of yellow light erupted from the tips of our wands and hit the cluster of men who had their swords raised above their heads, and they soared backward and slammed their heads against the stone church wall. Their skulls shattered into bits of blood and gore, and when their lifeless bodies slumped down to the floor, the other guards swarmed closer around their trembling prince, who looked like he was about to shit himself.
I stared down at the pack of dog-like familiars, and I could see the way their eyes were thirsting for fresh blood as they licked their lips. Then a collective and deep hungry growl resonated inside their chests.
âTell your familiars to attack,â I ordered under my breath. âNow.â
âYes, master,â the women responded, and between one breath and the next the animals all rushed toward the guards. Then the canines pounced on our enemies, dug their snouts into the menâs necks, and tore out their throats without hesitation or mercy.
âLord God,â a guard with deep-blond hair gasped as he looked around in sheer panic. âWhere are the bloody priests? We need them now, or weâre as good as dead!â
âIt doesnât matter where they are!â another one shouted before he reached into his waistband and snatched a small, star-shaped dagger. âTake this, you crazed, hell worshipping cunts!â
He threw the weapon with all his strength, and when it whipped past my face, I could feel one of its blades as it grazed across my skin and cut my flesh open.
When I turned around to see where it landed, Circe stood there in total shock, and the star was wedged right in the middle of her forehead. We were all momentarily stunned, but as blood dripped down her forehead, her lips curled up into a wicked smile before she pulled the weapon out of her skull and then licked the blood from the blade.
âDelicious,â the serpentine witch cackled as her forked tongue swirled around the metal. âWould you like a taste?â
Before any of the bewildered men could respond, Circe retracted her hand and flung the weapon back the way it came. The star-shaped dagger plunged into the left eye of her attacker and killed him instantly. His body collapsed to the floor, and the clanging of his armor against the stone floor echoed around the massive church.
âFucking heathens!â a soldier growled as he stood tall in front of their cowering prince.
