Chapter 10

My coven was still shaken up over what had happened, and I couldn’t blame them. Luna had congratulated us and said we passed with a perfect grade. She’d also said she was proud of us and that she admired our hard work, but this didn’t even please Morgana, the bookworm and perfectionist.

The brunette felt guilty for killing her own kind. They all did, I could see it on their faces.

But I sure as hell wasn’t going to regret doing what I had to do in order to survive. It was either them, or us.

And I was going to win.

Once we left the classroom, we walked down the hallway in an uncomfortable silence, and when I couldn’t take it anymore, I turned to look at my coven.

“Come on,” I said, “let’s grab something to eat.”

“I don’t really have an appetite,” Vesta muttered as she cast her silver eyes down to the ground.

“It will be good for you,” I insisted. “Trust me.”

“He’s right,” Akira said after a moment. “Let’s stop acting like little bitches and grab some dinner.”

“Fine,” Vesta sighed, and we all headed as a group to the banquet hall.

Tonight, there was a full plate of red, rare meat, mashed pumpkin, and mixed greens. I was digging in, but when I looked at the others, I noticed most of them, aside from Akira, were only pushing their food around on their plates. For some reason, they looked miserable as fuck, and not one of them said a word as they slowly ate their dinners. I was beginning to wonder if they were still feeling guilty. If so, I wondered why. We had no other choice but to kill those witches. It was either them or us.

Finally, Vesta slammed down her fork, and we all stopped eating and looked at her.

“I hate to say this,” Vesta breathed as she looked around the hall, “but that wasn’t something I ever wanted to do. I feel so absolutely disgusted with myself… like I just committed the ultimate sin… does anyone else feel like that, or is it just me?”

“Oh, and what?” Akira snapped with a scowl. “Would you rather be lying dead in that prison? Because that’s where you would have ended up if you didn’t do what needed to be done. Those bitches attacked us first, and personally, I don’t regret a single thing.”

“Yeah, I mean… no… you don’t understand what I’m trying to say--” Vesta struggled to explain, but it was clear Akira was not having any of it.

The black-haired witch raised her hand in an impatient gesture to make Vesta stop rambling.

“There’s no room for fucking hesitation, Vesta,” Akira growled. “Back there, it was either them or us. What more is there to understand? We made it out of there, and now, we’re going to eat this dinner and drop the entire thing.”

“She’s right,” I added, “if we didn’t do what we had to, we’d be the dead ones.”

“But--” Vesta argued.

“End of the fucking story,” Akira cut her off again. “Now, like I said, let’s eat our dinners and just forget about this bullshit conversation.
