The words didn’t make a lot of sense to Maud. After all the trouble of the fire-breathing potion, Maud knew she should rip up the spell and throw it in the bin. But she couldn’t stop herself staring at it. What if it gave her a brilliant talent that would let her win the contest?

Maud decided it was worth the risk. She read the spell out loud, remembering to start at the end this time. She looked down at the floor. It didn’t seem to be sinking. She clicked her fingers and pointed at the Bethany Blossom doll. Nothing happened. Maud shrugged. She was sure she’d read it right. Maybe it only worked in certain places or at certain times, or you needed a potion to go with it. Oh well.

Milly stomped in and shoved past Maud. She switched on her CD-player and immediately it began to blast out the ‘Pink Princess Pony Party Friendship Song’.

“Not now, Milly, please,” said Maud. She didn’t want to get that sickly theme tune stuck in her head.

“You should listen to it,” said Milly. “You could learn from its message.”
