CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Before Freya had time to consider what the hell was going on, she whirled back towards the door. Her senses screamed wrong, wrong, wrong! as her hands slammed against the wood, fumbling for a handle, a keyhole, anything to open the door.

Something snared her waist, just as her fingertips found the doorknob. They slid helplessly off the cool metal as she was dragged into the shadows. “No!” she screamed. She thrashed and flailed, kicking out her legs in the hope that they would connect with something – someone. Whoever had her was strong. Her struggles did nothing to ease their grip on her waist. She was hauled into the center of the warehouse with ease.

Freya’s nostrils flared, and her eyes swept wildly around the room. They were adjusting to the dim light now. She saw what looked like a stack of broken crates heaped against one side of the warehouse. Her assailant shifted their grip from Freya’s waist and shoved her down onto a standalone crate. Her hands broke her fall, shards of rough sawn timber splintering into her fingertips. She winced. The moment she found her balance again, she shot to her feet, intending to run straight back to the door.

A hand grabbed her shoulder, giving it a nasty tug that made her neck roll as the person forced her back onto her seat.

Wood screeched against stone as somebody dragged something towards them. “Don’t try to run,” a voice snarled.

Freya recognized it as belonging to the sailor who’d led her here. He stood several paces away, a blur in the shadows. Slimy bastard! She would flay him with a fork if she ever got the chance. A glance over her shoulder revealed a tall, wiry man with an unfortunately narrow face. His spindly fingers were still pinching her shoulder, and he towered over her, waiting for her to try to run again.

“This her?” the narrow-faced man asked, his voice nasally. “I can barely see in this damned light.”

Freya fought the rise of her pulse. Her blood roared in her ears. They had sought her out. Lured her here for tides knew what. Perhaps these men worked for Ginsworth. Or Yowan. She’d had the misfortune of pissing off so many people since meeting Hex, she could hardly keep up with who wanted her dead or alive.

Another horrible thought occurred to her. Maybe they’d brought her here for him. Captain Barossa – the pirate – finally come to conquer the spot where he’d marked his bloody X.

Tarras’s crewman came to a stop mere inches from Freya. He surveyed her with a cock of his head. His blistered lips parted as he smiled. “This is her, alright.”

Freya cringed in her seat. “If it’s money you want, you’ll be sorry to know I have none.” A lie. The money Hex had given her was tucked in the pocket of her skirts. But her gut screamed that money was not what either of these men wanted from her.

“No,” the narrow-faced one whined. “We ain’t here for that.
