CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The mid-morning sun cast a warm glow over Hibiscus Haven as Alice and Marco made their way across the resort. They hadn’t gone more than a few yards when a commotion broke out.

“No!” A woman yelled. “No! I didn’t do it! I didn’t do anything!”

Marco looked at Alice, eyebrows raised in alarm. “That sounds like Chef Yvonne.”

They doubled back to go toward the kitchen where Detective Hunte and her henchman were dragging the chef out of the kitchen toward the resort exit.

"I'm telling you, I did nothing to that man!" Tears streamed down Yvonne's cherubic face.

Marco stepped in front of the detective to block her. “What is going on here?” he demanded.

Alice couldn't help it. She loved it when he went from his usual goofy, good-natured self into protector mode.

“Please get out of our way, Mr. Bellamy,” Hunte said, not ruffled all despite the sobbing woman on one side and Marco blocking her path. “Unless, of course, you would like to also accompany us to the police station for questioning.”

"First, tell me why on earth you're arresting Chef Yvonne. What could she have possibly done wrong?" he demanded.

Hunte huffed. “You’re joking, right? A man was poisoned at this resort. She is the chef. He had been telling everyone her food was sub-par. I see motive and opportunity. Yvonne also has keys to the supply shed where the amaryllis bulbs were being kept. There we have means.”

Marco’s jaw tightened and he stepped aside. As they brushed past him, he said, “Don’t worry, Yvonne. We will get this straightened out. Stay strong.”

Yvonne hung her head but allowed herself to be led out of the resort. Marco turned to Alice and said, "Let's go look at those bulbs."

They found Naomi in her office. “Alice, how are you doing? Last night was so upsetting. I didn’t expect to see you this morning. I don’t think we should start on the garden today. I think at least a day to remember Mr. Dunbar and mourn his passing would be appropriate.”

“Naomi, they’ve arrested Chef Yvonne,” Marco said.

Naomi shoved back from her desk, her hand going to her mouth as if to stifle her shock. “No! That’s absurd!”

“We think so, too,” Alice said. “We’d like to take a look at the amaryllis bulbs to see if we can see any kind of clue that would help us clear Chef Yvonne.”

Naomi shook her head, the morning light catching the subtle shimmer of her blouse—an elegant draped affair quite different from the ill-fitting suit she’d worn when Alice arrived. You're too late, I'm afraid. Inspector Hunte already took the whole box."

That made sense. Alice was a little disappointed, but also glad that Hunte seemed to understand what needed to be done. Surely she’d dust it for fingerprints or the like and see that Yvonne had never touched it. “Was there anything unusual about the shipment that you noticed?” she asked.

"Actually, yes." Naomi's fingers nervously played with the edge of her desk. "When I checked this morning, the box had been opened.
