Tunnels of the Lost City

It was a maze of dark and musty tunnels.

The roots of the mushroom tree tower thing had intertwined themselves with natural caves and caverns beneath the earth, creating a massive network of passages beneath Arvalas. Sometimes we found ourselves walking through a completely wooden hallway, formed wholly of roots, while other times we were in a stony cavern with nary a root in sight.

And it was dark. Completely pitch black. If not for Lyra’s light prayer, we wouldn’t have been able to see a damn thing.

While the stones of the walls and floor were cool to the touch, the lack of breeze made these tunnels stuffy and oppressive. I wiped sweat from my brow and tried to ignore the beads running down my neck and back as I looked up at where we’d fallen from.

“Anyone think we can climb back up there?” I asked.

It was maybe thirty feet above us, and ten feet wide. The edges dripped with the slime of rotting wood and fungus, and it looked like the hole could become even wider at any given moment.

“No nearby footholds,” Kono muttered. “Nothing to anchor a rope on… No, we can’t go out the way we came.”

I breathed out. “Fuck.”

As one, we examined our options. Not counting the passage we’d recovered in, there were five other tunnels leading out from here. The chamber we were in must have been some kind of central area.

“The wooden tunnels, with the roots, were obviously grown on purpose,” Mokri pointed out.

Vaingloria nodded. “And that implies that they were intended for use by the elves. So there must be an exit down at least one of them.”

“The only problem is that we have no idea which one,” Logri said.

Mokri frowned. “Then we’ll have to keep checking tunnels until we find it.” With that, she strode forward, sword in hand, and cut a slash across the wood of the nearest root tunnel. “We’ll mark our progress like this.”

“I was just about to suggest something like that,” Kono said with a grin. “It’s really no different from the sweeps we were doing upstairs.”

“Except upstairs, we knew where the exit was,” I pointed out.

Kono shrugged. “So it’s a little different. Whatever.”

We made our way down the first tunnel. It was wide enough for us to walk in pairs, and I found myself toward the center of the formation, walking alongside Lyra. Her light hovered above her head, casting illumination over the entire group.

“Are you doing OK?” I asked her in a low voice.

Lyra gave me a sad smile. “Mostly,” she said. “Those bones reminded me of… that night.”

I nodded. I’d figured that was probably the case. “We’ll get through this.”

She didn’t reply.

“What are you whispering about?” Agru asked. He was behind us, walking alongside his heartmate. The question was directed at us both, but his eyes were focused squarely on Lyra.

“Wellness check,” I deadpanned.

The orc frowned, and I tried to ignore the uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.

The tunnel led to a fork.
