Chapter Four

Garrett ended the call to Morton, one of the werewolves who’d shown up in his yard and frightened Lala. He should’ve known not to let Morton watch over her. The man was like a dog when it came to being around pretty women. He just couldn’t resist getting close enough for a good sniff. Instead, he’d texted Raylon before calling Morton and had asked Raylon to grab a couple of the other pack members and watch out for her whenever he wasn’t at the house. Raylon would follow directions and be sure to watch from a distance.

He felt better knowing the matter was taken care of and that she’d still be protected in his absences. If Raylon and the others screwed up, he’d have to ask them to handle the ranch for him while he stuck close to the house. Doing so, however, would complicate matters when he tried to explain what he was doing to Lala and Danny.

Dan. I need to start calling him Dan, if only to keep the guy happy until I can get rid of him.

He grinned and checked out the kitchen window. Sure enough, old Danny-boy was still hauling hay from the back of the barn to the front. Not exactly a chore that needed to be done, but it would keep her friend busy for a while and out of the house.

As a werewolf, he’d been prepared to share his future mate with another shifter. Hell, even a female shifter. But he hadn’t been prepared to share her with a human. He frowned and watched Dan toss a bale of hay on top of the growing stack. Did humans have something like the connection?

But I’m her mate. I’m sure of it.

She had to have the connection with him, right? He could see it in her eyes, in her lovely expression, and smell it wafting off her every time they were within ten feet of each other. For now, he’d have to stop worrying about Dan and concentrate on what he had with Lala.

“It’s time to find out,” he said, talking to himself.

“It’s time to find out what?” The sound of her voice lingered sweetly in the air.

He pivoted around, and as it always did, the sight of her took his breath away. He’d gotten lucky. A werewolf never knew if his intended mate would be beautiful or sexy, but his was both. “Nothing. Just thinking out loud.”

She nodded then opened the walk-in pantry. “Do you have an idea of what you’d like to have for dinner?”

“Did Belinda bring the groceries?” He should’ve been the one to answer the door once Belinda, one
