Suspended
Letâs talk about the logic of suspending someone, because I never understood why schools did it.
I mean think about it. Usually the kind of person getting suspended is the kind of person who isnât a big fan of the whole school thing to begin with. So the punishment the school comes up with to keep them from causing more trouble is to kick them out of school?
Talk about rewarding all the wrong behavior in the form of a punishment.
So the next morning I was lounging around on my bed and thinking about what I was going to do that day. I had a lot of reading I could catch up on, or I could maybe start a new game of Skyrim or something.
Yeah, that sounded like the perfect vacation. I had so little time for video games these days, and right about then I felt like getting lost in a fantasy world would be just the ticket considering all the bullshit going on all around me.
Iâd just picked up a controller when there was a knock on my door. I sighed and threw it back down on my bed.
âCome in,â I said.
Mom stepped through the door. She was an adjunct English professor at some school that did a lot of online learning which meant she worked from home. Which was usually nice because it meant she could make her own schedule, but not so nice this time around because I was trying to enjoy the nice little vacation the principal gave me and she kept interrupting.
âHowâre you doing?â she asked.
âFine,â I said, neglecting to mention that Iâd be much better if sheâd leave me alone to play my video games in peace.
She might be on my side when it came to this suspension, but there was this weird tension going on with my mom. She obviously knew it was a bullshit suspension, but at the same time Iâd been punished so it was like she couldnât quite bring herself to treat this like the vacation I wanted.
She looked down at the controller and her mouth twisted in a frown. Sheâd never been a huge fan of video games. Iâd picked that habit up from dad who still had every video game system heâd ever owned going back to the first Nintendo.
âLook, I know this must be difficult for you,â she said.
âNot really,â I said. âIf the principal wants to be a jerk and give me a free vacation thatâs fine with me.â
Mom sighed. I could see where she was going with this. There was a part of her, a deep motherly part of her, that was telling her I was being punished by the school and that meant I should be taking this seriously.
That part was obviously warring with another part of her that thought the principal was an ass and I should be able to do whatever I want.
âYâknow this is going to be a long week if we donât work this out,â I said.
âWork what out?â she asked.
âWhether
