Chapter Twenty-Eight

I didn’t think that Joe was right about the Mustang chic being lost. I had given her good directions: drive toward the pass and turn right at the first sand road. Shouldn’t have been a problem You could see the bar from the highway. How hard was that? No, the odds were good the sexy blond with the big brown eyes and nice rack was just a flirt. And now she was back in her nest somewhere laughing her ass off. Or maybe she’d just been dumped and needed to salvage her ego by testing her skills with me. But then again, maybe she was legitimate. If she’d had another flat, she wouldn’t have another spare. A woman alone on the beach at night is not a good idea. I smiled at my creative imagination. A red-blooded male can rationalize any scenario to his favor.

I turned onto the beach crossroad at Bay Harbor and pulled to a stop where she’d parked the Mustang. Nothing. I drove farther toward the surf and turned in a big circle, my headlights covering the area on either side of the beach entrance. No sign of the yellow Mustang. The chic had flown the coop.

When I stopped at the highway, my headlights hit the sign to Bay Harbor. I checked the road in both directions. Turn left and I am back at The Garhole for another night of drinking beer with Joe Stubbs. Turn right and I could end up chasing my tail hoping to run into the Mustang. But I knew finding the blond was a long shot. Then I thought about Jake and Slim Green wondering if they’d returned from the hospital.

I crossed the road and turned onto the street where Green lived. His station wagon sat in the driveway. But if Green and Jake were inside tucked in for the night, who’s old Pontiac was parked on the street beside the house? I eased beside the Pontiac and spotted the bullet hole in the door from my .45 automatic. The thought of Joy’s boyfriend in the house sent shivers across my neck. Jake was right, Luther had returned. And he sure as hell wasn’t here on a social call.

I parked and grabbed my .45 out of the glove box. I checked the magazine, chambered a round and slipped an extra box of cartridges into my front pocket. If war was coming, I wanted to be ready.

The front gate was open something Green would never have allowed. I expected Buster to come full bore at me, but he didn’t show. I stepped inside the gate. The upstairs shutters were closed as usual, but on the far end, light flickered from the edge of a window. Probably a television, I thought. I considered the TV to be a good sign, until I eased farther into the yard and found Buster lying on his side in a pool of blood. He had a big cut on his head, but he appeared to be breathing. I was ready to rush the house and start blasting.
