One Day After Alex Was Shot

Mexico City International Airport

5:42 p.m.

They might be too late. More than likely, they were early.

Bond and Colonel got to Mexico City as fast as they could. It had been 32 hours since Alex was shot. According to the doctors, Alex would start to have irreversible aging within a week. Would die within three weeks.

Most missions had a fire under them. This one had a blazing inferno nipping at their heels. They had no margin for error. No room for slip ups. Everyone had a job to do. If any of them failed, Alex could die.

Bond and Colonel were tasked with finding the sniper.

Brad had given them a suspect. Fyodor Gusev, a former Russian military sniper, who had traveled to Mexico City from Istanbul Turkey under an assumed name, Terin Sisli. From there, he rented a car and drove to McAllen Texas where he crossed the border.

That’s his last verified location, although they could place him at Alex and Jamie’s home in Arlington Virginia at ten a.m. yesterday morning. When he took the fateful shot.

The assumption was that Gusev would retrace his steps. They had no record of him flying out of any American airport. It’s assumed he’d want to get out of the United States as fast as possible, but wouldn’t take unnecessary risks by going through a TSA line at the airport. Subjecting himself to the CIA’s extensive face recognition software program.

Gusev wouldn’t know they were onto him, but he’d take precautions as if they were. While retracing his steps wasn’t the fastest way out, it seemed to be the most prudent.

The math was fairly easy to calculate. McAllen Texas was 1763 miles from Washington, D.C. It’d take twenty-nine hours to drive. Give or take. Depending on the number of stops. Gusev would stay within the speed limit so he wouldn’t get pulled over by the police and he’d only stop for food, gas, and to catch a few hours of sleep.

He might not stop to sleep. Battlefield veterans like Gusev were trained to stay awake for long hours at a time, so Colonel and Bond didn’t factor sleep into their equation.

Once Gusev reached McAllen, he still had 602 miles to get to Mexico City. An eleven-hour and twenty-one-minute drive, according to their calculations.

Best case scenario, that put him arriving in Mexico City at two a.m. tomorrow morning.

Bond and Colonel were awakened earlier that morning and told to be at CIA headquarters at nine for a briefing with Brad. When they arrived, they were given a file on Gusev. Pictures. Background. Abilities. Everything the CIA knew about him.

Which wasn’t much. After he washed out of the military and went freelance, he dropped off their radar. This was the first time he had struck an American or ally target.

After reading the man’s file, Colonel was impressed. Gusev was said to have more than three hundred kills under his belt. To put that in perspective, the most decorated American sniper had 93. Of course, Russian snipers had different rules of engagement.
