Chapter 30

Preacher stationed himself on one side of the dusty farm road. I stood on the other, one shoulder pressed to the sap-slicked bark of a bleeding maple. The tendrils of mist seemed to have dissipated for the most part beneath the final rays of sun as darkness came complete. The glimmers and glances from moonlight extended over the farm road, bathing the ground in blues and grays.

Preacher paused, frowning into the shadowed woods.

The veil would be weakest in the dark—the best way to at least test our only shot at entry. The tiger's eye would teleport its thrower a short distance. But could it pass through a magical blockade? If it didn't work on this veil, it certainly wouldn't work on the Threshold Seal of the Hollow.

“Nothing for it, I suppose,” I murmured. “If we wait any longer, the veil will be completely gone.”

The distant sound of children playing had faded somewhat as the Gallows orphans retreated under the cover of night. The farmhouse itself carried its own, deeper protections which could even stand against the encroaching darkness, but now, out among the farmstead itself, we stood exposed.

I pulled a single gelatinous pack from inside my jacket pocket. The small tiger's eye felt squishy and soft beneath my fingers. It was little larger than a dishwasher pack where the gold and brown shimmer trapped within swirled and strained against the thin walls of its confines.

I dabbed my tongue against chapped lips, feeling the dry ridges. “Here it goes,” I murmured.

Preacher simply watched.

Then, I hefted the tiger's eye and tossed it through the mist, aiming just to the left of where my friend stood. It slammed into a nearby tree, exploding on impact. Instantly, I sensed a familiar sucking in my belly, as if a hook had been wrapped around my navel.

I felt myself lessen, lightening like vapor. My vision swam, and my eyes dotted with black spots. Everything seemed to spin and swirl, and I felt myself sucked forward, jettisoned as if by a sudden beam of light.

A second later, as my vision cleared, though, I realized I hadn't moved an inch.

The final flitter of the passing mist veil seemed to twirl and wave, like the cheeky gesture of a teasing hand.

My brow darkened. “Well... that's not a good start,” I murmured. I pulled a second, squishy pouch from my pocket, hefting this tiger's eye and aiming towards the mist a second time. Had Kay given me a bad batch?

I threw this tiger's eye as well, aiming towards the faintest portion of the lifting mist veil.

Again, I felt the swirling sensation, again, my eyes darkened, and again, nearly instantly, I re-emerged standing exactly where I'd been moments before.

“Bad batch,” I said out loud, growling now. “It must be.”

I turned, facing up the road, pulling a third pouch from my pocket and tossing it in the opposite direction of the mist. This time, however, my vision swam, my stomach twisted, and I blinked out of existence in one location and
