Chapter 25

Ellison Saint John

Ellison talked a lot on the ride. Dempsey just listened, probing gently when she felt she needed to. But he gave her a lot of information, so he wasn’t sure she took it all in.

Still, if she wanted him to reiterate, he would do. The more she knew about Sammy, the better, really. And he hadn’t changed much, Ellison figured, from when he was home before he went away to school. Sammy would have been what, fifteen when he went to college? Not that much changes in three years. Ellison was still the same.

The car slowed outside the station and Dempsey opened the door.

Ellison began to unbuckle, but her hand appeared in the air between them, her smile easy. ‘No, it’s okay, you stay here.’

He paused, not really knowing what to say. He looked over her, at her pale skin, the freckles across the bridge of her nose, her long, wavy red hair. She was slim, with an angular jaw, high cheekbones. Not usually his type, and old, but she was attractive, he couldn’t deny it. And they’d had a good conversation, on the way here. And she’d let him into the car as well. So maybe she thought the same thing. For now, he’d just play it cool.

‘Okay,’ he said, shrugging and sitting back in the seat, lacing his hands behind his head. He spent some time in the gym at Whitman. Did she know he went to Whitman? He’d slip it into conversation casually. ‘I’ll be here.’

‘Great,’ she said, grinning. ‘Back soon.’

He just nodded, barely looking at her.

She closed the door and headed for the station. It was still early but the day was heating up. Clear skies hung overhead, impossibly blue with just a tinge of yellow around the ridge. Like a crown.

Ellison soaked it in, feeling good. He wondered how long this was going to take?

She’d been gone five minutes now. How soon was soon?

He sighed and leaned forward, drumming on the dashboard with his hands. Where was she? They could be out, looking for Sammy. They could be solving this thing. And then his father would see. He’d see that Ellison wasn’t a kid anymore, what he was capable of. The old fuck. Why was he such a prick, anyway?

Ellison was getting warm. The air was thickening, the day shaping up to be hot. He couldn’t just sit here. He needed to do something.

The street outside the station was empty as Ellison stepped out of the car and looked around. Nothing moved, the whole town still gearing up for the day ahead. Slowly, it seemed. He checked his watch. It was half past eight already. Why the hell was everyone so lazy in this goddamn town? It’s no wonder his father was able to run it like he did. No one else here had any ambition, Ellison thought as he circled around the front of the Crown Vic, running his hand along the dirtied, bug-splattered paint, leaving long, dark lines in the dust.
