I chewed on my nail and paced in front of the back porch, my boots sinking into the plush grass. The sun had already begun its descent across the sky, and soon it would dip behind the tall trees lining the back of the yard.
And then the moon would rise.
âHere you go.â Preston dumped several small black bean bags into my hands, and I had to scramble to catch them.
âWhatâs this for?â
He pointed to two angled wooden boards he brought to the middle of the yard. âCornhole. Just try to toss the bags into the hole at the top of the board.â
My lips pursed. âBut why?â
âYou seem nervous, and since my cousin disappeared, I figured Iâd find something to distract you.â He tilted his head and flashed that crooked smile. âWe could always go to my room if youâd like another form of distraction.â
âUh, this is fine.â This guy was worse than Hawk.
A sting rippled through my heart at the thought of my best friend. Did he have any idea of what happened to me? Did he miss me?
âAim for this one.â Preston motioned me to a spot several feet from one of the stands.
I tossed the first bag, making it into the little hole. âIâm not nervous, by the way.â Liar! If I let the panic beyond the walls Iâd been creating since Fane bit me, Iâd collapse under the pressure.
Preston tossed a red bag up and down in his hand. âEveryoneâs anxious before their first shift.â
âReally?â My nails dug into one of the bags. âDoes it hurt?â
My question seemed to catch Preston off guard, and he missed the hole. âHas Fane not explained anything to you?â
I tossed a bag, making it onto the board, and then touched the tattoo on my neck. âWe havenât had much time to talk.â The bastard bit me two days ago and hadnât told me a damn thing about shifting.
âFane isnât known for being nice, but not talking to you is kind of a dick move.â Preston chucked another bag. âIt only hurts a little the first few times. Youâre tough, though. You made that hot sauce your bitch, so this should be cake. My mouth is still on fire.â
My smile didnât reach my eyes, and Preston dropped the rest of his bags to the ground before closing the distance between us. âThereâs nothing to worry about, Tate. Youâre safe here away from any humans. Itâs a little disorienting and takes some time to get used to, but youâre still you. Itâs not like you turn into some vicious creature without any control. Youâre just in a different form.â
I shivered despite the summer heat and humidity. âI wonât have the desire to hunt and kill?â
He winced. âWell, you probably will, but only animals. Not people. They taste terrible.â
A laugh slipped out. âYou know from experience?â
âI might have nipped at a hunter once when he tried to shoot me.â Preston shuddered. âTasted like old beer and stale pork rinds.â
âThatâs disgusting.â
He poked my cheek. âYouâre adorable when you smile.
