âI warned you, Kefier,â Caiso apn Willen snarled, slamming his hands on the table and sending the little tokens they used to mark the map flying across the room. âThis sympathy of yoursâthis willingness to ignore common sense because you felt sorry for somebodyâwill kill us all. If I knew that little imp was part of that retinue I wouldâve stuck this dagger into him myself!â
âItâs done, Captain,â Kefier murmured. âI couldnât have killed him without a reason, and if I had sent him all the way back here, he wouldâve tried to sell us out to the Dageians, anyway. For all you know, he wouldâve led them back to the camp.â
âHeâs right,â Eswenna said. âItâs not the worst thing in the world, considering.â
âThe fuckwit alerted Fort Oras that theyâre going to be under attack soon! If the Dageian military sends reinforcements, we might as well kiss this operation goodbye.â
âAs it goes, Captain, the best thing we could do isâ¦â Kefier stopped as the pavilion flap shifted. Sthura entered. She looked more irritated than usual.
âLord Tarron Beeching and Lady Isobel Dahrias are riding an hour apart from each other towards us.â
âFuck me bloody with a spoon,â Caiso groaned.
âCorrect me if Iâm wrong,â Eswenna broke in, âbut these two are not exactly on the best of terms, are they?â
âThatâs putting it lightly,â Kefier said, crossing his arms. âLady Isobelâs been begging me for months to let her borrow some of our men so she could launch an assault against Tarron Beeching and his father, Rohn. A private land dispute. King Elrend must have told them to declare a truce for now.â
âThe scout said theyâre an hour away from each other,â Sthura repeated, her face turning red. âThey donât know. No one who hates each other, truce or not, would dare travel so close otherwise.â
Kefier glanced at the map. âThey must have taken different routes. One of them mustâve taken the more perilous road through the cliffsâ¦â
âIt doesnât matter how they got here!â Sthura hissed. âWhat matters is that both got directed to this camp! That means disorder, problems we didnât anticipate!â
âCanât we intercept one, send them to Robazâs?â Caiso asked.
Kefier grinned. âTemptingâ¦â
âCaptain Robazâs camp is three hours west of here,â Sthura said, looking far from amused. âI daresay whatever noble we send out there would not appreciate it after days on the road. Less so, when they realize why.â
âAb, I hate it when you make sense,â Kefier grumbled. âDid your scout say how long weâve got?â
âNot very long,â Sthura said.
Caiso sighed. âIsobel. You shouldâve slept with the bitch when you had the chance.â
âSerious suggestions would be much appreciated right now.â
âThat was one!â
âIf you think itâs that easy then you sleep with her!â
âIf sheâll have me, I wouldâve done it yesterday!â
âIâ¦I think Iâm going to send escorts to meet them both,â Eswenna broke in.
âThank you,â Kefier said. She looked relieved as she saluted and slunk off.
âMaybe you should join one of those escorts,â Caiso said. âGo join the one meeting Lady Dahrias. I am serious, this time.
