Tmra must have seen or heard the branches of the fig tree shiver, because as he walked below it he looked up, straight at where Luxanthus was perched on one of the lower branches with a ripe fig between his teeth.

The younger boy blinked up at him. “Nkidu?”

Luxanthus blinked back down at him. He removed the fig from his mouth and greeted, “Tmra.”

The younger boy’s messy brown hair had fallen over his right eye, such that only his yellow-orange one was visible. It was the eye that made him look like an owl. Especially when he tilted his head quizzically, as he was doing at that moment. “What are you doing?”

“Picking figs,” Luxanthus answered, holding up a cloth satchel full of the fruits. “I’m on a short break from training, so I thought I’d eat something. There are a lot of ripe figs right now.” He hopped down out of the tree, landing lightly on the ground. “It wouldn’t be good to eat too much before going back to fighting,” he admitted, and held the satchel out to his younger brother. “I have extras. You can share them with Diyomendon and Rkalla.”

Tmra took the satchel of figs, looking down at them before looking back up at him. His hair drifted out of his right eye slightly so that the dark one became visible as well. He opened his mouth and started, “I…” but then trailed off.

Luxanthus looked down at him, feeling a dark hollowness in his chest. The last time they’d talked had been when Tmra had run into him in the hall, and then proceeded to fall apart while Luxanthus could do nothing to stop it. His presence had seemed to make it worse.

He knew that he was the only one who could fight the Accursed. He wished that that would make people feel better, instead of seeming to make them feel worse. He wished they’d feel glad that he was capable of fighting so that they didn’t have to, instead of only feeling guilty for not being in his place.

He was supposed to make people feel reassured and safe. Instead, he made everyone feel horrible. He hated it.

He looked away from his younger brother. He wanted to say something. Only, reassurances didn’t seem to help. He wondered if there was anything he could say.

He missed hanging out with his younger brother. He didn’t have the time, anymore. It was necessary, but it hurt.

He wanted to say something. He thought about what thoughts he used to reassure himself when he started to feel distraught, and started, “Once I defeat the Accursed and Ordyuk is safe again…” He met his younger brother’s owlish gaze, Tmra’s bangs having fallen back over his dark eye from the curious angle of his head. “Let’s go boating on the Aru River,” Luxanthus said.

He’d always used to love doing that. He remembered Tmra enjoying it, too.

Looking up at him, the younger boy said, “Okay.”

Luxanthus looked back at him, feeling keenly how much he’d missed him, and looked away.
