CHAPTER ELEVEN

The fire trucks showed up before the cop cars.

That was a good thing because they had only come tearing out of the hospital as the fire trucks showed up. They ran across the parking lot and hopped in the car Rachel and Dr. Thompson had driven. The one with the stickers identifying it as a rideshare vehicle.

The hospital’s big front doors hung off their hinges, and muddy pond water had flooded much of the building. Nevertheless, black smoke poured out the open doorway, so the fire trucks screeched to a halt, and the firefighters ran in to try to deal with whatever was happening.

Jack didn’t even have time to get his seatbelt on before Rachel pulled out, flooring it as she drove for the iron gate. Luckily for everyone, the gate stood wide open to let emergency vehicles in.

As Rachel hit the road in front of the hospital, turning so wide she almost skidded into the trees, Jack spotted the blue lights of ambulances and cop cars approaching from the other direction.

Even if anyone thought to chase them, they had other priorities to deal with right now. They got out of there, rocketing from sight before anyone had time to consider who they were and whether they could be responsible for the disaster that had struck the Halliday Institute.

As far as Jack was concerned, they weren’t.

Nora had summoned Tsunami, so he would have shown up at the hospital even if they had never heard of the place. If that happened, he would have killed Dr. Chen in a misguided act of vengeance, and they wouldn’t have her here with them now.

“You know,” Rachel commented. “If the chaos I glimpsed is any indication, it wouldn’t surprise me if they called in the National Guard.”

“Oh, it’s not that bad,” Jack feebly argued.

Rachel looked in the rearview mirror. “Professor?”

“It was that bad. It was a madhouse in there.” He paused and laughed. “A madhouse. Huh. That wasn’t intentional.”

There wasn’t much room in the back seat, which currently held Dr. Thompson, Tasha, and Dr. Chen. Dr. Chen sat in the middle, looking about as shell-shocked as a person could look.

Tasha was fuming. When Jack turned to check on the others, he saw the angry expression on her face.

“You, uh, you okay there, Tasha?”

“I’m okay,” she replied. “What about you, Jack? What was the big idea, trying to burn my brother to death?”

It wasn’t easy since no one liked being accused unfairly, but Jack forced himself to remain calm. He stayed mindful that this was part of being a leader.

“I wasn’t trying to kill him,” he explained. “He was trying to kill me, though.”

She wasn’t buying it, at least not at first. “Then what were you trying to do?”

“I was careful with the level of heat. The goal wasn’t to burn your brother, although his arm did get a little seared, but to make him black out. That would have been the most effective and least damaging way to stop him from attacking us and give us a chance to talk to him.
