July 12, 1849

During the night the wind changed to the east from which it blew a gentle breeze during the forenoon. Leaving our camp, we crossed the Sweetwater and took up that stream, the mountains shutting it in so close as scarcely to leave room for a wagon to pass. The road is smooth & not quite so much of deep sand. . . . The ranges of naked rock present some grand sights indeed. After proceeding about 3 miles, for the first time we saw snow on the top of a ridge off to the left several miles. The sun is shining intensely yet it was sufficiently cool to require a coat on! After passing some most interesting looking ridges for 2 miles further, we camped near the river, as the Guide informed us that we would find no grass for 16 miles, and also to let the train come up so that I might complete my arrangements with the Dr. Directly to the west of us some 25 or 30 miles rises a range the tops of which are now covered with snow, presenting a splendid appearance. Joined the Dr. and transferred my loading to his wagon. Dickerson mad again, & wanted to fight as usual. Evening very cool — requiring an overcoat.
