9.

We leave the bar and cross the length of the town, moving to a higher position, looking down at the expansive lake.

The water stretches nearly as far as the eye can see, though I do see a distant shore. And I might—might—even see a bulky home set far back from the water. Then again, my eyes are better than the average bear, so to speak.

“It is there, senorita, that we believe the Nazis have established a stronghold.”

“Looks like a house. A big one, granted.”

“You can see it?”

I nod. “A hint of it.”

“A little too far for me to see, but I have already seen it up close. And yes, it is a house. A mansion, actually, and quite similar to the Berghof, Hitler’s Bavarian retreat in the Alps. We believe there are underground tunnels, too, perhaps even an extensive network of rooms, offices, barracks, cells, and a command center.”

“Command center for what?”

He shrugs, staring off. The day is hot and there’s sweat on his brow. The hair on his face shifts in the wind. “Hard to know. Perhaps they are planning an operation of sorts there. It is rumored they are attempting to rebuild, restructure, reorganize. I’m hearing whispers of the Fourth Reich. If so, this would be the place. They’ve long since paid off the local authorities. They are, for all intents and purpose, a sovereign nation there at the far side of the lake. No one visits there. No one can get close, in fact.”

“But you did?”

He nods solemnly. “Trujillo and I did. We were surprised. He got captured; I escaped.”

“And now you want to save him.”

“Of course, Samantha. And I believe you were sent back in time to help me.”

“A vampire and a spy versus the last of Hitler’s army?”

He bites his lower lip, shrugs. “Seems about right.”

I look at the man before me, with his comically thick beard and nondescript clothing. How good of a spy is he? I hadn’t a clue. Would he be more trouble than he’s worth? I don’t know that either. I sense competence from him. Hopefully, I won’t have to save him, too.

“It’s a long boat journey there. They’ll see us coming by boat a mile away. Hiking, we might gain the upper hand.”

“How long of a hike?”

He shrugs. “Day and a half. It’s about thirty miles. We might get away with driving half of that, but they have guards stationed along the road.”

“Hmm. Why don’t we just fly?”

“Surely they would hear a plane. Are you suggesting parachuting or—”

Since we are alone at this section of the street, which borders a park, I unfurl my black wings. Antonio gasps, stumbles back, falls on his rump.

“Actually, I’m suggesting we use these.”
