Chapter Nineteen

Charm

Doctor Roberts, as it turns out, didn’t have much to do with the zombification of Mindy Hogan.

As best I can tell, the worst thing he’s guilty of is several flavors of medical insurance fraud, plus practicing with a revoked license. I’m not sure how much karmic balance he achieves by providing free help to the poor, but he’s still scamming money and increasing the costs on other patients. Mostly because I have bigger (dead) fish to fry right now—and I don’t need people asking me how I know all about him—I decide to let fate have its way with him. If he gets caught, he gets caught.

He did, however, evidently have an encounter with a demon. That itch to pull out the sword has to be an instinctive response from whatever power Azrael imbued with me along with those wing tattoos. Or maybe I really have become like a quarter angel. I guess it’s kind of like how some dogs always growl at the scent of cats. Whatever ‘angelic’ side I’ve inherited reacts to the presence of demons the way Anthony reacts to broccoli. I’m sure if the boy carried a broadsword, he’d smash vegetables whenever possible.

Even when I had him on baby food, he hated it. This one time, I thought he was eating it, but the little bugger had been stuffing his cheeks like a hamster. As soon as he couldn’t hold anymore, he spat it back out—mostly all over me.

Anyway, it feels like I’m getting nowhere fast. Maybe if I take Mindy back to that abandoned place, something will happen. With any luck, she might be able to remember a few details. So, I drive back to her place. Except... I’m not entirely ready for the sight that greets me when I walk in.

Mindy’s standing in the kitchen, sawing an enormous knife back and forth across her left forearm. Her tongue’s even sticking out a little bit like Tom & Jerry when the cat’s really concentrating on doing something bad.

“Umm…?” I ask.

She looks up. “Oh, hi.”

“What’s with the knife?”

“Well I got the munchies, so I was gonna make myself a sandwich. Like once a month, Alisha bakes a whole chicken. The knife slipped and cut my finger, only it didn’t. Well, not really. Check this out.”

I head around the counter, and almost lean on a plate with her mostly-completed sandwich. It’s got tomatoes and lettuce and mayo. Just needs chicken. Meanwhile, Mindy saws at herself again, but not until it looks like she’s really bearing down hard does even the smallest cut appear. And, within a second of her pulling the knife away, it heals.

“This is kinda cool. I think I’m like crazy tough or something. Are you? Is this normal for… umm, us?”

“No. I cut as easily as any normal person, but it heals right back up, too.”

We fiddle around for a few minutes—okay, I surrender to curiosity—and it looks like the girl is extremely resilient to damage. She’s also ridiculously strong. Like, I’m sure
