Nota bene: As mentioned above, it was while working with Pauline that I met John Maher, the Buzzcocks’ drummer. John was a great, down-to-earth northerner who was more interested in drag car racing than being a pop star. In fact just a couple of years later he gave up playing drums to concentrate on his passion for cars, starting a business building custom engines and transmissions that became very successful. But the main thing for which I have John to thank is that he wore prescription dark lenses in his spectacles. Until then I never knew that it was possible to buy them and as soon as I returned home from Pauline’s tour, I bought my first ever pair of prescription shades with some of the proceeds. I never looked back. They revolutionised my life.
