Chapter Twenty-Four

One minute, that nightmare was ready to slaughter everything in sight, the next it was mewling and scraping at Adam’s feet like some kind of pet that had gotten caught shitting on the good carpet. Vanessa shuddered as she watched through the crack in the door. A voice like something from the exorcist come out of Adam’s mouth.

It was in a language Vanessa didn’t know and had never heard someone speaking before. How a human throat could make that kind of noise, she couldn’t imagine, but it was more than one voice. Adam’s, and something else that sounded like chewing tin foil tasted. It felt like needles on her eardrums.

“The fuck is that?” Samson asked quietly at her shoulder.

Vanessa turned and shushed him. Whatever Adam was doing, the creature was responding. It made a series of shrieking, squealing, clicking sounds.

They were talking.

“Give me your shotgun,” she said. “And keep an eye out for anyone headed our way.”

“Hell, no, I’m not giving you my—”

“I’ve got a shot,” Vanessa hissed. “Give me your illegal, unlicensed sawed-off shotgun, Samson, and I’ll forget that I saw it. Bad enough having a gunfight in the middle of the day, you want to be holding this when the police arrive?”

He grumbled, but he thrust it at her hand. She checked that it was loaded, swallowed, and waited.

The exchange continued for at least a few minutes. In that time, the creature looked up twice. When it did, Vanessa caught sight of its eyes. She’d known on some level, what it was. Or, rather, what it had been. Those eyes, even misshapen like they were, were very obviously Sammy’s.

Vanessa had been in the car with that creature. She’d been alone in the basement with her. No more than a few feet from something that could have torn her to pieces.

It was stupid, now, to look at that thing and feel a pang of regret about blowing its head off. It hadn’t hesitated when it came for her. But there it was, a tight little knot in her stomach. She listened to the guttural exchange until finally it ended. Get out of the way, Adam.
