Now that you’ve got your edges cut in, it’s time to break out the roller and cover the surface of the wall.

MATERIALS

roller, roller cover, paint tray, paint

1 Pour the paint into the tray. Place the roller in the tray and get it saturated with paint.

2 As soon as you get it saturated, put the roller on the wall and start rolling the area. Start with 3–4-feet (91–122cm) sections.

3 Move the roller from the top down to the bottom. You want to do one long streak from the top to the bottom.

4 While you do this, put pressure on one end of the roller. You’re essentially feathering it off and making one strong line down one side of the roller.

5 You’re going to overlap the paint, so place the roller so its middle is on the line you just created. Bring your roller down again, once again placing pressure on the right side of the roller, moving the line farther down the wall.

6 What you’re trying to do is make sure that line drags across the wall and keeps moving. So as you’re each doing each section, that line should move farther down the wall until it either vanishes into a corner, vanishes into a door frame’s trim, or is barely seen in darker lighting.

7 You’re going to repeat that process over and over again until you get to the other end of the wall—and then you’re done.

Once you are done with all the priming, then you can do the finish coat. The finish coat is essentially the same thing—you’ll want to use the same techniques you were using in the previous steps, but now this is opening night rather than a dress rehearsal.

A finish coat tends to be thicker and doesn’t flick as much paint. If you’re doing a matched color, then the color you’re matching is as close to the paint you have right now, so you probably don’t need to get precise. If you’re doing a different color, really think about the details and take your time. Use some of that artistic flare to help you make sure it blends into the wall as best as possible.
