Chapter 11

Tameka

“Kemara? Channing?” I yelled out, not able to get down the stairs fast enough. “Where are you guys?”

I was annoyed and felt like I had been deceived, maybe even they were laughing behind my back. Of all the people to invite on the trip…Jeb was the worst choice. I rounded the corner to the kitchen and found Kemara and Channing sitting at the table. They were talking in hushed tones, and it was obvious they were talking about us.

Kemara looked up, smirking.

I crossed my arms in front of me. “Are you serious? Jeb?” I asked her, thinking I’d gone wrong by telling her about us. How dare she double cross me like this?

Channing turned around and looked at me, but remained quiet. Kemara was the first one to speak. “It’s only a week, Tameka,” she said, as if that was going to fix everything.

I took a deep breath and tried to calm my nerves. “You could have told me, at least.”

“First off…if I would have told you he was coming, then you would have backed out, right?” I didn’t answer, but we both knew the truth on that one. “Secondly, it wasn’t until we were getting ready to come here that we learned he couldn’t find a room. This wasn’t all intentional. I promise you we didn’t try to just keep this from you. It’s not some conspiracy we have going on.”

I rolled my eyes. “And, you didn’t feel the need to tell me once we got here that Jeb…Jeb Kemara…was going to be across the hall from me?” I asked, not liking the weakened sound of my voice.

Kemara arched an eyebrow. “To be fair, I tried. You were the one that wanted to rush out for a swim, so I thought that a few more hours wouldn’t hurt.”

Kemara was full of excuses, while I was stuck with the image in my mind of entering the bathroom, unbeknownst to the fact that he was there, and looking at his half-naked body. I was thrown for a loop. At this moment, I could still feel my face flushed at the mere sight of his him.

“This really changes things,” I mumbled.

Then Channing spoke up. “It’s not so bad. Jeb’s not so bad. If you get a chance to know him, then you’ll see that.”

My mouth hung, and I stared at my brother-in-law. “With all due respect, Channing, I love you and all, but I can’t fathom what a few days with Jeb would do to change my mind.” I paused, before adding, “No offense.”

He shrugged. “None taken.”

I turned around and caught a sight of Jeb standing in the doorway. He looked frustrated by my words. I looked away from him and Kemara spoke, so she could be the peacemaker of the group. “This place is big enough for all of us to share one week together,” she said. “Don’t you think?”

I looked at her. She had a valid point, but I was bullheaded and didn’t want to hear logic. I wanted Jeb gone.
