Chapter Twenty-Two
Simon
Markâs lips pursed into a small bud of displeasure. âBut how did he sound?â
âLike Rolly. You know. Like himself.â Simon kept his gaze on his iPad. He didnât dare make eye contact with Mark. During their conversation the day before, Rolly had warned him not to say anything to Mark about anything. It hadnât taken more than thirty seconds on the phone for Simon to hear Rolly sounded stressed the fuck out. But in the end, he hadnât said anything worth holding back from Mark.
âWhenâs he coming home?â
Simon was very tempted to say, âHeâs back in the country at least,â but he wasnât sure if Mark knew heâd ever been out of it. Rolly was being very mysterious, and even if he was back on home soil, he hadnât made any mention of how much longer heâd be gone. He hadnât bothered to tell Simon what he was doing that had him away from home and his family, and especially Mark, for so long. Only that it was necessary, and that it had to remain quiet until he knew more.
âHe didnât say.â Simon risked a glance, now that he was pretty sure Mark was staring out of the window and had his back to Simon. His spine was too stiff, his shoulders too erect. Mark was stressed too. âHe sounded fine, Mark,â Simon lied. âBusy.â
âDoing what?â
No fucking clue, and itâs pissing me off, too. Simon had so far enjoyed the challenge of keeping Black Alice on schedule. The contractors had been great about accepting him as the new project manager. Things were picking up, though, and staffing was going to be an issue soon. Rolly had said only that he trusted Simon and Gina to manage things. But he wouldnât even explain why he was keeping his own partner in the dark about where he was and why. That was the part Simon took the greatest issue with. What might Rolly be doing that would worry Mark more than not knowing and so prompt him to keep it a secret?
âHe hasnât said,â Simon confessed. âI would have thought heâd tell you?â
Mark shook his head. âWe donât talk about work when he calls. His rule.â
âHe doesnât want to know how things are going at the shelter?â
Mark made a disgusted noise. âWe donât talk about his work.â
âIf thereâs anything I can doâ¦â
Mark just shook his head. Even from the back, he appeared miserable. âThanks, anyway.â
A soft knock at the door brought both of them around. It was Yves.
âWhenever you are ready, Simon.â His French accent slanted Simonâs name into something more exotic than it had a right to be.
Simon grinned. âWhy donât you tag along?â he asked Mark. âYouâll like Joey. And you can help me carry fifty pounds of potatoes.â
âI told Dean Iâd be in for the nine-thirty group session.â
Yves nodded once. âWe will drop you off on the way home. It will be good for you to keep occupied.â Trust Yves not to pull any punches.
Simon frowned at him, but Yves just shrugged.
