“Can’t be helped, dearie…” She looked her over. “You’re new to Bernal Heights?”

A small girl of three or four Sadie presumed was her daughter gazed up at Sadie with liquid brown eyes.

“Bernal Heights? Oh, is that the name of this place?”

Perplexed gray eyes gazed out at her from a round face. The woman’s complexion was clear of lines, but the skin on the hands that linked around her child’s slim waist was reddened and work weary.

“You don’t know? You are new here. What brings you out?”

“Visiting a family friend,” Sadie said quickly. “And you?”

“Ahhh Fergus and I are lucky enough to have a place out here. I grow vegetables to sell at market and he gets plenty of work as a builder. Lots of houses going in up here. You’d fit well,” she laughed. “Many of them are Micks like us.”

“Oh yes, and there’s the Convent school out here too,” said Sadie.

“That’s right. Most of the Irish folk send their children there. One of the first in the Bay,” she added with pink pride. “Sister Consuela does a great job.”

Sister Consuela does a great job?

“Oh? Is she one of the teachers?”

“Sister Consuela? Oh, not just a teacher. She’s the principal.”

Phoebe elbowed her in the ribs.

The wagon drew to a stop and her fellow passenger slipped the child to the floor.

“You’ll have to walk, now darlin’,” she said to the child. “Mummy’s got parcels to carry.”

She stood and picked up a bulky carryall loaded with provisions. She glanced down at Sadie.

“Enjoy the rest of your trip,” she said.

In the momentary clatter as the rest of the passengers for this first stop disembarked, Phoebe dug her in the ribs again.

“When we get there, you’re doing all the talking,” she said. “I was no good with the nuns, if you remember?”
