âCanât be helped, dearieâ¦â She looked her over. âYouâre new to Bernal Heights?â
A small girl of three or four Sadie presumed was her daughter gazed up at Sadie with liquid brown eyes.
âBernal Heights? Oh, is that the name of this place?â
Perplexed gray eyes gazed out at her from a round face. The womanâs complexion was clear of lines, but the skin on the hands that linked around her childâs slim waist was reddened and work weary.
âYou donât know? You are new here. What brings you out?â
âVisiting a family friend,â Sadie said quickly. âAnd you?â
âAhhh Fergus and I are lucky enough to have a place out here. I grow vegetables to sell at market and he gets plenty of work as a builder. Lots of houses going in up here. Youâd fit well,â she laughed. âMany of them are Micks like us.â
âOh yes, and thereâs the Convent school out here too,â said Sadie.
âThatâs right. Most of the Irish folk send their children there. One of the first in the Bay,â she added with pink pride. âSister Consuela does a great job.â
Sister Consuela does a great job?
âOh? Is she one of the teachers?â
âSister Consuela? Oh, not just a teacher. Sheâs the principal.â
Phoebe elbowed her in the ribs.
The wagon drew to a stop and her fellow passenger slipped the child to the floor.
âYouâll have to walk, now darlinâ,â she said to the child. âMummyâs got parcels to carry.â
She stood and picked up a bulky carryall loaded with provisions. She glanced down at Sadie.
âEnjoy the rest of your trip,â she said.
In the momentary clatter as the rest of the passengers for this first stop disembarked, Phoebe dug her in the ribs again.
âWhen we get there, youâre doing all the talking,â she said. âI was no good with the nuns, if you remember?â
