CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

I never once thought I’d be the person sitting before one of the bringers of our organization—the ones that do anything and everything to get information out of people. I’ve seen many of our girls sent to them once they broke a rule in our organization and many left them completely numb or in sobs. I used to cringe as I’d watch them drag a limp MOT, with lashes over the girl’s body, back to her room. They are what struck fear into our girls to make sure we wouldn’t break any rules or laws.

I had broken too many of both.

This was nothing compared to the pain I felt in my chest as The Men in Red dragged me through the manor when we arrived, and I saw some of the girls who looked up to me watching. It was nothing to the gasps that left them when two bringers grabbed me up by the arms and started dragging me down to their room of hell—the screams that left me as I tried to fight back… my pleads.

Sweat drenched my forehead as I stared up at the silent man in front of me. He had tried many tactics to get answers out of me. Who was the man you were with? What did you tell him? What does he do? Did you betray our identity? What secrets have you spilled? None! I had screamed back—none. He didn’t buy into my lies.

My body ached.

My stomach was queasy.

My head pounded.

The commander stood beside him, a solemn look on her face. Her arms were folded as she looked at me. I had been here for two days, and this was the first I saw of her. What I thought was no big deal in my eyes apparently was disastrous in hers. I broke her trust, went behind her back, and told an outsider about my life—the one that was supposed to be for our organization’s ears only.

“She’s said nothing?”

“No, Commander. Nothing at all. Unless you’re counting the lies she has spilled.” The man turned and grabbed a belt from the wall. “Give me the word and I can get the proper answers we need.”

“Leave us.”

He didn’t ask twice as he put the belt back in its place and left the room. The Commander slowly started to circle the chair I was strapped to. She heaved out a deep sigh, shaking her head as she bit her lip. Finally, she stopped in front of me again, grabbing my chin and tilting it up.

“Haven, just tell me what you told that man. Tell me who he is. That’s all we’re asking. You know how much I care about you! This is killing me.”

“Then why won’t you let me go?” I croaked.

“Because despite my personal feelings, I am still the Commander of this organization. I have duties I must uphold. If I let you get off with a slap on the wrist, what does that say to the other girls? They’d be rebellious within seconds. I can’t afford for that to happen.
