Chapter Thirteen
Then — Before
The evening before our law school graduation means I need to finalize my plans for me and Ward. Apparently, his dad had some last-minute meetings crop up, meaning his parents couldn’t fly in today. Ward doesn’t even know when they’re arriving for the ceremony tomorrow, or if they’ll even make it, at this point.
Good, because it’s more time I get him all to myself.
Around us in the efficiency apartment our things are packed and ready to move out tomorrow. We don’t have much more than we first brought to our freshman dorm room so many years ago.
Over the last couple of weeks, Ward’s gone depressingly quiet, his mood deteriorating the closer the time to confront his parents arrives. He hasn’t actually seen them in person in over a year, using his internship at a local law firm—one where we both work—as his reason for staying in the city and not visiting.
After we’ve checked and double-checked everything, I pull him down onto the couch with me. We’ve spent hours here watching TV, studying.
Making love.
“I want to talk, Ward.”
He nods. “Yes, Master.”
“No.” I cup his face in my hands. “Liam and Ward.”
Finally, he gives me a little nod.
I take his hands and press them to my chest. “Baby, I love you. You’re free of your old man now. You’ve graduated. Your college degree is paid for. From this moment on, you’re free to set your own course. There’s no law that says you have to go to work for your dad’s firm in Atlanta. Sit the bar with me in Massachusetts.”
I already have a job lined up just outside of Boston, courtesy of a guy in the law office where we both interned.
Even better? Ward can get hired there, too. All he has to do is ask them about it. The good word has already been put in for him.
“I don’t want Dad coming after you. I couldn’t handle that.”
“I’m not worried about it. He’s a bogeyman in your mind because he raised you. Trust me when I say bullies like to scare you into compliance, especially when they know that scaring you is the only tool they have.” I squeeze his hands. “I found a studio apartment already. I can afford it even on just what I’ll be making. The two of us together will be able to put money in savings.”
“I don’t have a job there. I don’t even know if I could find a firm to hire me.”
“You can.” I tell him what I’ve already found out. “No more excuses, baby.”
“What do I tell my dad?”
I shrug. “Tell him you’re taking a vacation, if you want. Tell him a friend invited you to spend a week in Massachusetts, and at the end of the week tell him you love the area, you found a job, and you’re not coming back to Georgia after all.”
“You make it sound so easy.”
“Because it is that easy. You don’t ever have to confront him that way. You can change your phone number, if you want, and never speak to him again.
