CHAPTER SEVEN

“We can’t just tell Dee and Wayne that we’re going to be looking through their things and expect them to be okay with it,” Tulia said after a second. Austen seemed about ready to march over to Dee’s tent and tear through it.

“Are we supposed to pretend we didn’t find anything?” he asked, scowling. “I could be stuck around these people for the rest of the day. If one of them killed a man, I want to know.”

“Maybe it would be better to lay low and let the police handle it when we finally manage to contact them,” Tulia hedged. “It might be dangerous to push the matter.”

“You don’t have to do anything,” he said. “Just go hide in your RV, if you’re scared of them.”

She bristled. “I’m just trying to be cautious and use common sense,” she snapped. “And whether they’re innocent or guilty, they aren’t going to be happy about having their belongings searched.”

“We can tell them what we found, and I’ll even offer to go first.” He gave her a hard look. “I have nothing to hide.”

She bit her lip and after long moments of thought, sighed. She couldn’t tell him what to do, and she had a feeling that he was going to confront the others without her if she refused to help. It might be better if she went along with him and tried to keep everyone calm.

“Fine.” She wasn’t happy about it, but she was willing to go along with it for now. “We’ll tell them we need to talk. I’ll get Dee, you get Wayne.”

Austen gave a sharp nod and marched off to fetch Wayne. Tulia made her way over to Dee’s tent and knocked awkwardly on the canvas. “Dee?” she called out. “Are you in there? We need to talk to you.”

She heard someone shifting and a moment later Dee unzipped the tent door part of the way to peer at her through eyes that were red from crying. “What is it?”

“Austen and I discovered something we think might be a clue about who killed Cory. We’re going to discuss it as a group.”

Dee frowned but nodded and unzipped the tent the rest of the way. She put on her shoes and then climbed out of it. Tulia looked up to see Wayne and Austen already on their way over to them. The four of them gathered in front of Dee’s tent, her and Wayne sharing puzzled looks before glancing at Tulia and Austen. Austen was looking at her too, and she realized he was waiting for her to speak. She had been the one to make the discovery, after all, even if the rest of this had been his idea.

Taking a deep breath, Tulia cleared her throat and said, “I was going to buy another bundle of wood since mine got wet in the rain last night when I saw that the lock box by the firewood stand had been broken open and all the money was missing. I checked the lockbox on the front of the pavilion and the same thing had happened.
