October 30, 1956 â Sinai Desert, Egypt
Coyle stared at the black smoke rising into the sky at the mouth of the canyon. He didnât like the look of it. It would attract attention and they were in a war zone. There was no way to put the fire from the ruptured wing tanks out until the fuel was exhausted. It was bad enough he was shot down by an Israeli, now he had to worry about Egyptian patrols. He wasnât sure what would happen if the Egyptians found him and his Spanish crew members. Technically, America and Spain were not at war with Egypt but if they were captured with the Israelis they might be seen as spies or sympathizers. Somehow, he thought that might be worse than being an actual Israeli soldier in uniform. He didnât want to find out.
The medic tended to the wound on his forehead. âHow much water do we have?â said the medic.
âThree liters, I figure. We lost most of the water in our emergency tank to a couple of bullet holes,â said Coyle.
âThat wonât last long. The wounded men need more than the rest of us. Their bodies need fluids to rebuild their blood supply. Dehydration will kill them as sure as a bullet.â
âAlright. But I am going to need some water if Iâm going to cross that desert and get help.â
âYouâre going out there?â
âWe donât have much choice. If we stay here weâre likely to die of thirst or get picked up by an Egyptian patrol. Iâm not sure how kindly theyâre going to treat you Israelis.â
âAt least we wonât die of thirst and the men will get the medical treatment they need.â
âYou sure about that? I bet theyâre pretty pissed off right about now. You know⦠the Israelis invading their country and all.â
âThe Fedayeen invade our country almost daily. At some point you have to fight back.â
âIs that what all this is about? Showing the Arabs the Israelis canât be pushed around?â
âPart of it, I suppose. Itâs worked in the past. They attack us. We bloody their nose. They go off and pout until they attack us again. Itâs a vicious circle. But itâs the only way we can survive.â
âHell of a way to live.â
âI agree. We all hope to live in peace one day.â
âGood luck with that.â
âI could happen. Itâs got to happen. We canât keep hating each other forever.â
âI suppose. Well, I better get going. Iâll send help as soon as I get picked up.â
âWhat about them?â said the medic motioning to the Spaniards.
âI donât know,â said Coyle. âIâll ask âem.â
Coyle walked over to the Spaniards and said, âIâm heading out. Do you wanna go with me or stay here?â
The Spaniards looked confused. Coyle walked through the whole thing again but with hand motions. The Spaniards discussed it between themselves and then the navigator motioned that he and the cargo assistant would go with Coyle. âAlright. Youâre with me I guess.â
Coyle grabbed a map and the survival kit from the cockpit.
