Oil is one of the most important resources in the world. So it was quite a day in April15,1897 when oil started to gush from a huge oil well near Bartlesville. The well was on the property of Cherokee citizen Nellie Johnstone, and thus the well was nicknamed âNellie Johnstone No. 1.â It became the stateâs first truly successful oil well. In no time at all, people were coming from all over the world seeking their fortune in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma is the only state in the country with a working oil well on the grounds of its state capitol.
Oklahoma City or OKC.
Say it either way, itâs okay by me.
Of course in Oklahoma, O stands for oil, oozing from an oil well in the Oklahoma soil.
