CHAPTER 9
I DON'T KNOW how long I stayed in the place that was so like Jack’s library, the books of prophecy laid out in front of me. I only knew that the answers I'd found after a simple question that had seemed so innocent had rocked my world.
Will there ever be another Tracker? Why couldn’t the answer have been no?
Pamela and Marcella. I had to stop Pam. That was the only possibility I could see. Marcella was a child, a baby who didn't need to be hunted by demons.
I knew I needed to move on and yet I stood there, frozen. A question that would take me somewhere else, but not where I needed to go, was on the tip of my tongue.
“Spit it out,” I said to myself, nodded and followed my own advice. I needed this answer, because I wasn’t sure I would get another chance to ask it.
“Can I stop the Witch from creating a new Tracker?”
The world didn't move, didn't shimmy or adjust. I stood and stared at the table in front of me. “What the hell, are you broken?” I shook a fist at the library around me, tempted to walk away. Fuck it, I was walking. I turned, put my back to the table and took a step. And incredibly, the table was in front of me again. The same seven books were still where I'd left them.
I spun and the table was behind me. Then in front, then to the side. No matter which way I stepped, the table was there.
This place was no different than the prison in some ways. I could be lost here forever, asking questions, trying to figure out the answers given before being allowed to move on. I ran a hand over my head and stalked to the table. I picked up the red book, the book of the fanged, and let it fall open in my hands. At the very bottom of the page the wording started, chilling me to the core.
“There is only one way to stop the creation of the new Tracker,” I had to flip the page for the rest of the prophecy, “and that is by the death of the Witch before she tastes her nineteenth birthday.” That would make Marcella five. Five years old, and Pamela was going to essentially set the demons on her? No, that wasn’t possible; there was no way my Pam would do that.
I gritted my teeth as I read the lines over and over again. I picked up a few more of the books, but they all said the same thing. Death was the only way to stop her.
Of course it was. Of course the only way would be to end the life of the one who needed to create the Tracker in the first place. I threw the book in my hand across the room and snarled at it as if it were the book's fault I understood all too clearly what had to be done.
