Chapter 7

Rift

Certain that I could find Ruth at the Santiago Foods factory, I pulled into the large parking lot, parked as close to the door as I could and rushed out of my car to barge into the huge facility.

A young receptionist looked up from his phone and smiled. Before he could even ask what I wanted, I hurried past him and beyond the double doors that led to the string of offices beyond.

“Hey,” the receptionist said as he stood. “Wait a minute. I have to announce you. Who are you and who are you here to see?”

“Rift Rocco,” I called back. “I’m a friend of the family. No need to escort me. I know my way around.”

That seemed to be enough to satisfy the young man who then sat back down.

I peered into the offices but found no sign of Ruth. Then I saw the door with her name painted on it.

“There you are,” I said softly. Without bothering to knock, I turned the doorknob.

The door was locked.

Damn it.

I hesitated. Not wanting to attract any unnecessary attention, I was reluctant to bang on the door and demand that she open up.

Instead, I pressed my ear to the door.

Nothing. Silence.

I knocked gently on the door.

Still nothing. More silence. Not even the slight sound of movement.

At the end of the hall was a set of glass doors that opened onto the actual factory.

She could be anywhere in the massive facility.

I approached the double doors and looked at the employees, busy pushing crates of tomatoes and other stuff around. Just as I was about to push the door to the factory open, I heard a door slam behind me.

I turned to see Bruno standing at the other end of the corridor with the receptionist at his side.

“That’s the guy I was telling you about,” the receptionist said. “Rocco something. You know him?”

Bruno nodded. “Oh, yeah,” he said, his hard eyes locked onto mine. “Rift Rocco. Yeah. I know the useless punk.”

The receptionist, sensing the tension, retreated to his front office.

“Where is she?” I shouted.

“Get out.”

“Where is she?” I repeated.

Bruno took a few menacing steps closer.

I knew that the old guy had some fighting experience, but I had youth on my side. I took a step forward, clenching my fists and ready to pound him with them.

“Do you really want to cause a scene?” Bruno said with an incredulous cock of his brow. “Here?”

“I’ve asked you twice… a legitimate question. Where is Ruth?”

“None of your fucking business,” Bruno said. “That’s where she is.”

Enraged, I lunged at him, shoving my shoulder into his gut and pinning him to the wall.

“She is my business,” I shouted.

Bruno pinched my neck between his thumb and index finger and applied just enough pressure to get me to release him. He then spun me around and pinned me to the wall, his elbow up under my chin and a gun nudged up in my gut.

“You’re even dumber than you look,” Bruno said. “With all the Santiago guards here? You rush in and start a fight with me? Come on.
