CHAPTER SEVEN

HILARY TUXFORD had said that if Sanchia’s memory returned it might do so in snatches, but there had been no more snippets of long-forgotten phrases or words spoken, not the slightest glimpse of anything in her lost past.

A couple of days later they met Chet and Hilary in Hamilton.

The Bermudian capital was alive with tourists, so they were lucky to find a table for lunch in one of the colourful historic buildings that lined its main street.

‘Are there any developments you’d like to bring to my attention?’ the psychiatrist asked Sanchia when they were settled—inside, because the balconies were full—sipping long cool appetisers before their meal.

‘Nothing,’ Sanchia admitted with a rather weary shrug, her attention drawn by the clip-clop of hooves to the street outside, where one of the horse-drawn carriages available for hire to tourists was making its way along the busy thoroughfare.

‘Nothing,’ Alex echoed beside her, ‘because every time she gets close to remembering something she backs away. Now, why do you think that is, my clever learned friend, with your far greater experience and wisdom than mine?’

‘Is it greater, Alex?’ Hilary’s tone was contesting. ‘I’m sure you can unlock her if no one else can. She must be quite a challenge for you. And I know how much that brilliant mind of yours thrives on challenges.’

‘What would you have me do?’ he said dryly, his fingers long and dark against the cool condensation of his glass. ‘Feed her to the wolves and see what’s destroyed first—her sanity or her future?’

The pyschiatrist’s mouth firmed as she took his castigation on the chin. ‘I’m pleased to hear you’re concerned about both.’

The two great minds were locked in combat again, and, looking exasperatedly from one to the other, Sanchia couldn’t help chipping in—primarily to Alex. ‘Would you please stop talking about me as though I’m not here?’

‘I’m sorry, Sanchia.’ Contrition marked Hilary’s swift response.

‘Forgive us for forgetting our manners. I’m afraid I’ve always been too outspoken for my own good, and Alex is a master at making one say more than one intends—as I’m sure you’ve realised by now.’

Apart from which, it stimulated the psychiatrist to argue with him, Sanchia decided. From the woman’s flushed cheeks and her bright, animated eyes, it was clear that even the mature, practical Hilary wasn’t immune to this man’s lethal magnetism and charisma.
